I’m convinced the new DC Universe could be secretly working on a team-up movie between Batman and Superman, with James Gunn’s latest comments making the possible project more likely. After a long search, DC found its Superman in the form of David Corenswet. All signs point to Gunn’s Superman movie being a major hit, as impressions on social media for it are high, and the DCU movie has broken impressive trailer records leading to its release.
While things are looking good for Superman, the DCU version of Batman is in a bit of a limbo. The last concrete update we had on Batman’s announced The Brave and the Bold movie was that a secret writer was working on the script, with Gunn helping them closely. Casting for the role — like the majority of the DCU’s canon characters — is expected to only take place after the script is ready. However, after a few DC updates, I believe Batman could debut before then.
James Gunn Has Teased His Next DCU Movie After Superman
The DCU’s Creative Chief Already Has Many Projects In The Franchise
James Gunn is DC Studios’ co-CEO, alongside Peter Safran, and the creative chief of the new DC. However, differently from Marvel’s Kevin Feige, he has a more hands-on approach. For instance, Gunn is a writer and director on the first three projects in the DCU, which are Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2. As expected, Gunn will not stop doing that, and he already has his eyes set on another movie to take on after Superman releases.
Gunn recently addressed whether he was working on a Superman sequel. The director more or less confirmed that to be the case, with his wording being quite interesting. According to Gunn, he is developing a movie that could be seen as a Superman sequel, but it does not seem to be just “Superman 2,” saying, “…is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.” It appears David Corenswet’s Superman will be back soon, but with a twist. Check out the full quote below:
“What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
A World’s Finest Movie With Batman And Superman Fits James Gunn’s Update
The DCU Batman Will Not Be Played By Robert Pattinson
Based on how Gunn worded his comments about his next DCU movie, I believe we could be looking at a Batman and Superman team-up project. The director agrees that his upcoming mystery film will be a Superman sequel of sorts, so it seems like David Corenswet’s Superman is going to be part of it. However, it is not a straightforward sequel, and that makes me believe the project could show the DC hero teaming up with another character.

While there is a long list of characters the DCU could choose from for a team-up with Corenswet’s Superman, I could think of none other than Batman to be at the top of it. The DCU would be smart to put its two biggest heroes together early into the new universe’s run. It could also cement how different the franchise is from the old DCEU by making a full movie where Batman and Superman are allies, perhaps teasing the start of the Justice League, rather than the heroes fighting nearly to the death like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Why Batman Being In The Superman Sequel Makes A Lot Of Sense
While we know The Brave and the Bold will happen in the DCU, the studio is currently focused on another entry for the Dark Knight. Gunn is still waiting for director Matt Reeves to turn in the script for The Batman 2, which DC has guaranteed remains a priority for the studio. The Batman 2 has faced a series of delays, now set to arrive in theaters only on October 1, 2027. That impacts the DCU’s Batman, as I can’t see two Batman movies releasing in the same year, so 2027 is a no-go for The Brave and the Bold.

There is also not enough time for the film to be ready for a 2026 release, nor could it, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface occupy the two movie slots DC has next year. That is why I think Gunn could be working on a team-up movie featuring David Corenswet’s Superman and the DCU’s Batman. That way, the new Bruce Wayne could debut before his solo movie comes out, not having to worry about possible new The Batman 2 delays, which would be perfect for the DCU.
