The Justice League has just received its most exciting update yet for the new DC Universe, and it seems like fans might not have to wait so long for the team to return to the big screen. Marvel’s Avengers movies showed the power of a major superhero team that unites characters from all over a shared universe. DC tried to go for that with 2017’s Justice League. However, the project’s many behind-the-scenes issues prevented it from being one of the DCEU’s best movies.
Justice League ended its theatrical run with $661.3 million (via Box Office Mojo), which was incredibly disappointing for one of the most famous teams in all fiction. So far, no Justice League movie has been announced for the DCU’s Chapter One, which mostly consists of solo stories, though there are a few teams starting to pop up in the universe. After a major update, I believe the Justice League could soon follow those teams in DC’s upcoming movies.
James Gunn Has Shared The DCU’s Biggest Justice League Update Yet
The DCU’s Chief Opened Up About The Franchise’s Future
DC Studios’ creative chief, James Gunn, recently shared a few updates on the status of certain characters and projects set to come from the franchise during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Among the news was the reveal that a Wonder Woman movie is in development, which means all three DC heroes are set to be in the DCU’s Chapter One, as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman now have solo movies announced. They could come together in a Justice League movie.
While Gunn did not state that a Justice League film was coming to the DCU, the studio head talked about the team in the interview. Gunn confirmed that the team is on his mind, though he said there is no Justice League yet in the universe. That is important, as in the DCU, heroes like Superman and Batman have been active for years before audiences first see them. Gunn’s biggest tease came when he was asked if the Justice League was part of his overall plan for the DCU’s Chapter One, saying, “Sure.”
Gunn’s New Superman Sequel Comments Could Be Connected To The Justice League
The Man Of Steel Will Be A DCU Staple
Elsewhere in the interview, Gunn focused on what is next for him in the franchise. In addition to his duties as a studio head, Gunn is also the writer and director of multiple DCU projects. In fact, the first three entries in the DCU — Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2 — all hail from him. Gunn addressed whether a Superman sequel could happen. Previously, the director said he was already “pre-writing” his next DCU project.

According to Gunn, he is working on a sequel story to Superman. However, it would not be a straightforward “Superman 2,” which Gunn teases, saying, “But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.” Based on his comments, I’m convinced that could mean Gunn is working on a film that continues Superman’s story but does not have him as the sole focus of it. That sounds a lot like a team-up, and what better way to do so than with a Justice League movie? If there is anyone to do it, it is Gunn.
How The DCU’s Chapter One Could Be Leading To A New Justice League Movie
The Franchise Is Already Setting Up The Team’s Debut
A Justice League movie happening before the DCU’s Chapter One ends makes a lot of sense. It could be the project that all the other individual stories are building up to, though, depending on the scope of this phase, it could mark its halfway point, setting up more hero interactions in the DCU projects that come after it. That said, the groundwork for the debut of the DCU’s Justice League is already being laid in Chapter One’s first projects.

The Justice League was brutally killed in a vision in the animated Creature Commandos, with heroes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and many more appearing. Gunn’s Superman movie will see the debut of the Justice Gang, a team sponsored by Maxwell Lord that features the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific. The team working with David Corenswet’s Superman could be what slowly builds to the Justice League‘s debut, and based on Gunn’s new comments, I think his Superman sequel of sorts could continue on that path.
