Spaceballs 2 Update Confirms Rick Moranis Among 3 Returning Stars & Release Window

Spaceballs 2 now has its release plan confirmed, and three key stars from the original are set to reprise their roles. Released in 1987, the original Spaceballs featured Mel Brooks as director and co-writer, with the film serving as a clear parody of Star Wars. The film has since become a cult classic, and it was announced in summer 2024 that Spaceballs 2 was in the works at Amazon MGM Studios, with Brooks and Josh Gad producing, and Gad co-writing the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. It was rumored that Gad would also star in the film.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Amazon MGM Studios now confirms that the unтιтled sequel to Spaceballs will release in theaters at some point in 2027. Brooks is confirmed to be reprising his role as Yogurt, a Yoda parody, in the film, which will feature Josh Greenbaum in the director’s chair. Brooks may not be the only returning star, however, as ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reports that, according to its sources, Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will also be returning as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively. The report also notes that Keke Palmer has seemingly joined the sequel in an unknown role.

Few details are known about Spaceballs 2, but Amazon MGM’s press release about the film’s confirmation is in keeping with the original movie’s comedic style. Check it out below:

“While the тιтle, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Brooks celebrated the sequel’s confirmation with a post X, formerly Twitter, which teases that the film will poke fun at the current age of sequels, reboots, and franchises:

I told you we’d be back,” Brooks writes in his post.

What This Means For Spaceballs 2

Why Brooks & Moranis’ Returns Are Such A Big Deal

Though no specific release date is shared for Spaceballs 2, a 2027 release will mean the film will likely go into production either later this year or at some point in 2026. If Pullman and Moranis return alongside Brooks, the film will feature most of the core Spaceballs cast. John Candy, who played main character Barf in the original film, pᴀssed away in 1994, so if that character returns, the role will have to be recast. Daphne Zuniga also played a prominent role in the original as Princess Vespa, and it’s currently unclear if she will be returning.

Spaceballs 2 will mark a significant project for both Brooks and Moranis. Brooks turns 99 years old at the end of June and hasn’t appeared on-screen in a movie since 2005’s The Producers, though he has remained active in the voice acting space. Similarly, Moranis stepped away from live-action movies after 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves in order to focus on his family. The fact that these two stars are returning to the big screen could be a major audience draw for Spaceballs 2.

In addition to playing Yogurt, Brooks also played President Skroob in the original Spaceballs.

Our Take On The Latest Spaceballs 2 Update

Why The Film Still Faces A Key Challenge

As Brooks’ video makes clear, now could be the perfect time for Spaceballs 2. There have been plenty more Star Wars movies since the release of the first Spaceballs, after all, so there will be lots of material to draw from. The current age of sequels and reboots more generally could also serve as a strong basis for comedy, especially since the battle between original movies and franchise films has become more prominent in the public consciousness.

Of course, the fact that the sequel is arriving so many years after the original is also a risk. Though Spaceballs is undoubtedly a comedy cult classic, it may only occupy this space for viewers of a certain generation, and actors like Brooks, Moranis, and Pullman returning may not be as important to younger viewers. It remains to be seen how Spaceballs 2 fares in theaters, but it’s evidently one to keep an eye on.
