Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House 2 Gets A Major Filming Update From Producer

Road House 2 gets a new filming update, with the Jake Gyllenhaal movie now looking to get cameras rolling in the near future. Serving as a remake of the 1989 Road House starring Patrick Swayze, Doug Liman’s film hit Prime Video last spring, introducing Gyllenhaal as Dalton, an MMA-fighter-turned-bouncer who takes a job at a dive bar in the Florida Keys. The remake was a viewership hit for the streamer, leading to confirmation last May that Road House 2 is in the works. It was subsequently revealed that Guy Ritchie will direct the film.

In a recent interview with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, producer Charles Roven reveals that filming on Road House 2 will get underway this fall. While Roven doesn’t share any story details or casting information about who may be appearing with Gyllenhaal, he says the film “should be starting in September.”

What This Means For Road House 2

When The Jake Gyllenhaal Sequel Could Release

If filming for the Road House sequel does indeed start in September, the film should wrap up principal pH๏τography before the end of the year. It’s not clear what Amazon MGM Studios’ release plan is for the film, but, with this schedule, it could end up releasing in late 2025. It’s also not clear whether there’s any chance Amazon will give the sequel a theatrical release. Liman memorably threatened to boycott the Road House premiere last spring over the film’s Prime Video release, and it’s possible the first film’s streaming success will alter plans for the sequel.

A September filming start also means that announcements about which Road House cast members could be returning may not be far off. The remake featured Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen, and Jessica Williams, and all of these characters except Magnussen’s remained alive when the credits started to roll. The Road House ending does, however, feature Dalton heading off on a bus to a new location, suggesting the sequel could feature an all-new supporting cast.

Our Take On Road House 2’s Filming Start Date

Guy Ritchie Could Deliver An Improved Sequel

Though the film may have been a viewership success, the Road House reviews were mixed from critics. The second film now has an opportunity to improve on this experience, delivering a more cohesive and hard-hitting experience. The use of CGI in the first film’s fight scenes was controversial, working well in some instances but standing out in others. With Ritchie at the helm, it’s not clear if the sequel will fine-tune this approach of revert to a more traditional way of filming fight scenes, but news in this regard may only be a few months away.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Road House (2024) has a 60% from critics and only a 52% from audiences.

Ritchie may have a number of classics under his belt, but his most recent film, Fountain of Youth (2025), was not well received. With Road House 2, the director has an opportunity to make up for this disappointment, injecting his unique and beloved style into a more grounded story.
