Frozen is one of Disney’s most popular movies of all time, and the next big release coming to Disney+ continues a fantastic trend for the streaming service. Ever since Disney launched its streaming service, it has tried its hand at all types of content. Direct-to-streaming movies, big-budget Marvel and Star Wars shows, and original animated programming have all been prominently featured on the platform, to varying levels of success. However, one Disney+ approach has been unanimously praised, and this new Frozen project proves that Disney is continuing to pursue this venture.
After the success of 2013’s Frozen, Disney realized that they had their next big franchise on their hands. Thus, they decided to rapidly expand it, eventually leading to the release of Frozen II and the upcoming releases of Frozen 3 and Frozen 4. However, Frozen has ventured far outside the realm of films, with it also getting toys, theme park attractions, animated shorts, and more. One of the most unique pieces of Frozen art is the Broadway musical, which premiered on Broadway in 2018 and had a North American tour from 2019 to 2024.

This Is Disney+’s Latest “Live Performance” Movie After Hamilton & Taylor Swift
Proving That They Are Continued Successes
Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical isn’t the first time that Disney has recorded and released a live performance on Disney+. In fact, Disney has already released another musical in the form of a professional recording. On July 3, 2020, Disney+ released a professional recording of Hamilton, the hit musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton was one of the most in-demand musicals at the time of its streaming release, meaning that it was a major deal for Disney to get it on the platform.
The other major live performance that Disney+ has released wasn’t a musical. Instead, it was a concert. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) was released by Disney+ on March 14, 2024. This was a professional recording of Taylor Swift’s Los Angeles shows of the Eras Tour, with it featuring several additional songs that weren’t in the concert’s theatrical release. This too was a major hit for Disney+, proving that the company could continue to invest in streaming releases for live performances of hit musicals and concerts.
What Recorded Shows Could Disney+ Release Next?
There Are Tons Of Options
If Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical is a success, then it would make sense for Disney to continue to invest in live performances. Some obvious candidates are Disney’s own musicals, with The Lion King being one of the most popular options. Other shows like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast are still running meaning that they could be released too. Musical productions of Coco and Tangled are also in the works from Disney Theatrical Productions, meaning that they could be candidates in the future as well.
Outside of Broadway musicals, there are still plenty of options. Disney could license concert recordings from big artists or do recordings of Disney concerts. They could also do recordings of special Disney programs like Disney on Ice. Even releasing theme park shows like Fantasmic!, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure, or Festival of the Lion King would be a great way to follow up on the Frozen musical.
