There’s been practically no new news about Fast & Furious 11 for a while, which means the movie will likely miss its perfect release window. After the cliffhanger ending of Fast X, fans were excited for the next entry in the long-running franchise. Fans have a lot of questions after the ending of the tenth movie, which hit theaters in 2023. For example, people desperately want to know whether Roman, Tej, Ramsey, and Han survived the plane crash at the end of Fast X. Over two years later, we still haven’t gotten any answers about the future of the story.
In addition to wanting some answers about Fast X’s shocking ending, anticipation is also high for the upcoming Fast & Furious 11 since it will seemingly be the franchise’s last movie. As the final movie, Fast 11 seems set to bring back characters like Luke Hobbs and Gisele Yashar for one last ride with Dom and his crew. However, since we have gotten barely any updates about the film, I’m very worried about Fast & Furious 11. Because of the lack of updates, it seems like a guarantee that Fast & Furious 11 will miss its perfect release date.
Fast & Furious 11 Was Originally Scheduled For 2025
Director Louis Leterrier Later Indicated It Had Been Delayed To 2026
At CinemaCon 2023, even before the release of Fast X, Vin Diesel announced that the eleventh film in the series would be released in theaters in 2025. The original release date for Fast & Furious 11 was actually April 4, 2025, which means that the film would have come out already if production didn’t experience any delays. Slating the eleventh film for a release date about two years after Fast X led fans to believe that there was a solid plan in place for the final entry in the franchise.
However, unfortunately, Fast & Furious 11 quickly had to be delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. This is understandable, since practically every major Hollywood production experienced delays because of the strikes. Since filming didn’t begin in 2023, director Louis Leterrier revealed in a May 2024 interview with Fast & Furious 11 would be released in summer 2026. In the interview, Leterrier also claimed that filming would begin on the next Fast & Furious movie in the fall of 2024. Read his comments below:
It’s happening. It’s happening very, very soon. I’m able to shoot a little horror movie this summer. I’m finishing my horror movie on September 15th, and I start Fast on September 16th.
Obviously, Leterrier’s claim that Fast & Furious 11 would begin filming in the fall of 2024 didn’t come true. As of now, there has still been no official word on when the movie will start filming, which is very surprising for a blockbuster of this size. Furthermore, in April 2025, Diesel took to Instagram to beg Universal to announce Fast & Furious 11′s new release date. This suggests that production may begin soon, but also makes it seem like Diesel and the studio are not on the same page, which is not good for Fast & Furious 11.
2026 Will Be The Fast And The Furious’ 25th Anniversary
It Would Be The Perfect Time To Release Fast 11
Based on all these production delays, and the fact that the whole process has just seemed very unorganized, it seems like Fast & Furious 11 may not release in the summer of 2026, after all. This is disappointing, since 2026 is the 25th anniversary of the Fast & Furious franchise. Therefore, the studio could have used next year to both hype up Fast & Furious 11 and celebrate the history of the franchise. Since it is a very popular franchise, Universal could have re-released some previous films leading up to the release of Fast & Furious 11.
Of course, the studio could still schedule re-releases of Fast & Furious movies next year. This would still be a good strategy since it will bring the franchise back to the forefront of people’s minds years after the release of Fast X. However, these re-releases won’t feel the same if they are not leading up to Fast & Furious 11’s release. Since the eleventh movie could very well be the end of the franchise, framing the year as a celebration would have been perfect. Unfortunately, it seems like Fast 11 being ready for a 2026 release date may be impossible.
Delays Are Only Hurting Fast & Furious 11
It’s Feeling Less Like A Priority
Even though Fast X had a very exciting ending, it’s already become clear that general audiences are losing interest in the eventual Fast & Furious 11 since it is taking so long. Even though it is part of a major franchise, these constant delays could impact the success of the eleventh movie. It’s worth noting that Fast X was the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise since 2011’s Fast Five, which suggests that general audiences are not as interested in the series as they once were.

The 25th anniversary of the franchise and possible re-releases could have helped reignite interest, since Fast & Furious 11 is probably no longer on the minds of casual fans. However, since Fast & Furious 11 will probably not be ready for a 2026 release, it’s possible that it will end up earning less than Fast X. This is not to say Fast & Furious 11 will be a complete box office failure, but for a franchise with films that have grossed over $1 billion, it would be disappointing for the final movie to underperform.
Will Fast & Furious 11 Even Happen?
Vin Diesel Is Determined To Do It
Because Fast & Furious 11 is taking so long, it’s worth considering whether the film will ever be made. It would be surprising if Universal suddenly gave up on the Fast & Furious franchise after all these years, but the lack of concrete updates about the movie is interesting. Diesel’s aforementioned Instagram post suggests that he and Universal may not be on the same page, which could doom the movie. However, Diesel has worked with Universal for years, so it would be surprising if production didn’t begin on Fast & Furious 11 eventually.
If production does begin this year, there’s a chance Fast & Furious 11 could still make a 2026 release, possibly later in the year. However, I’m not counting on this since there’s been no official word about when filming begins. Additionally, every Fast & Furious movie has released in the summer. Therefore, I think it’s much more likely that the next movie will aim for a summer 2027 release date, rather than a late 2026 release. Because of this, I don’t think Fast & Furious 11 will get released on the 25th anniversary of the franchise, which is a shame.
