First Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Trailer Previews An Epic & Emotional Goodbye For The Crawleys

The Crawleys prepare for their last adventure in the first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Set for release this September, the upcoming movie will conclude the beloved franchise that first began on television in 2010. It will feature much of the core Downton Abbey cast, including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, and so many more. Much like how the series and previous movies consistently brought the characters into different eras, Downton Abbey 3 takes place in 1930 and finds everyone navigating how to move into the future.

Focus Features has finally unveiled the teaser trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The footage spotlights several returning characters, with Mary (Dockery) among the most prominent, as the video reminds fans that it is almost time to say goodbye. Check it out below:

What This Means For Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

This Is Going To Be The Sendoff Fans Deserve

Even if the тιтle wasn’t so obvious, the first Downton Abbey 3 trailer makes it very clear that this is the end of the line for the Crawleys and all who inhabit the тιтular home. Whether that means everyone will be literally moving out of Downton remains to be seen, but it is telling that Robert (Bonneville) is shown pressing a kiss to the side of the manor. It’s a very sentimental gesture from a normally тιԍнтly-wound character, and it could suggest he’s preparing to say goodbye to his house.

Still, the overall tone of the Grand Finale trailer is celebratory, with an enhanced version of the theme song ringing out over images of characters like Isobel (Penelope Wilton) and Mr. Carson (Carter) looking happy in some form. There’s also a subtle Maggie Smith reference, as the portrait of the late icon’s character Violet is shown while Mary looks on contemplatively. All told, it seems The Grand Finale intends to serve as the ultimate tribute to the characters and universe audiences have loved for so long.

Our Take On The Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Trailer

I’m Ready To Cry And Cheer In Equal Measure

The cast of Downton Abbey: A New Era poses for a pH๏τo.

Some might claim Downton Abbey has gone on for longer than it needed to, but I’m thankful the franchise will get the chance to go out with a bang. No one likes saying goodbye to something they love, but the Grand Finale trailer gives me hope that these characters will get a fitting ending, and we’ll be left satisfied even as we all wipe away tears. That the trailer even found a way to incorporate Smith tells me the creative team knows the most important beats to hit, and is keeping the fanbase in mind. I, for one, can’t wait to see Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale when it hits theaters on September 12.
