The Marvel Cinematic Universe will have one movie beyond Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, even after schedule changes, and that makes a fan-favorite hero being the star of it more likely. Over the past few years, Marvel Studios has had a few releases with divisive reception, both on the movie and TV sides of the franchise. That is why Disney CEO Bob Iger now wants future MCU projects to focus on franchises and big characters.

That makes sense, and I believe that we are going to start to see that in a huge way in the next few years after the MCU’s 2025 projects close the chapter on the phase of the franchise that started with the creation of Disney+. With Marvel having fired Kang the Conqueror actor Jonathan Majors, every new project in the Multiverse Saga has to focus on the main storyline of the franchise, not detours, and so I have a good idea for the lead of the MCU’s 2027 mystery movie.

Marvel Studios Kept A 2027 Date Amid MCU Slate Changes

The MCU Recently Made Some Major Changes To Its Schedule

So far, the MCU’s Multiverse Saga still has to see the release of an Avengers movie. While Thunderbolts* ended with the reveal that the team would now be called the New Avengers, that was not the same. Thankfully, two Avengers movies are set to be released in the next two years. However, we will have to wait longer than expected for them to arrive, as Marvel has delayed Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with both moving from May to December in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

While the biggest news was related to the Avengers movies getting delayed, Marvel also made quite a few changes to the MCU’s release slate. The November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027 dates previously belonged to “Unтιтled Marvel” movies, with them now becoming “Unтιтled Disney” films. While the studio made some major changes to the MCU’s 2027 schedule, another movie besides Avengers: Secret Wars remains. Currently, the MCU has an “Unтιтled Marvel” movie to be released on July 23, 2027, and I know the perfect hero to lead it.

I’m Convinced Doctor Strange 3 Is The MCU’s Unтιтled 2027 Movie

Doctor Strange Is One Of The Marvel Heroes With The Most Multiverse Knowledge

Before the Avengers movies were delayed, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was set to be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. However, Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man movie will be the MCU’s first 2026 film. Due to that, only the unтιтled July 2027 MCU movie will stand between the Avengers films. That means that whatever hero would headline the film would have to make sense timeline-wise for the MCU, which is why Doctor Strange 3‘s story is the perfect fit.

Benedict Cumberbatch has yet to be announced for Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast. The actor has given contradicting statements about his presence in the MCU movie, with it seeming that if Doctor Strange ends up being in the next Avengers film, his role should be small. Given his extensive multiverse knowledge and how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended with Strange going to stop an incursion with Charlize Theron’s Clea, Doctor Strange 3 could continue that plot line and serve as the perfect project between Avengers movies.

Marvel Studios Has Plans For The Hero’s Future In The MCU

Marvel Studios has not yet announced Doctor Strange 3 to be happening. However, I believe that is simply a matter of time. While quite a few MCU movies have struggled at the box office during the Multiverse Saga, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended its global box office run with a hefty $955.8 million (via Box Office Mojo), nearly surpᴀssing the coveted $1 billion mark. Doctor Strange and the multiverse are a box office match made in heaven, so Doctor Strange 3 is perfect for the 2027 slot.

Adding to that is the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch teased Doctor Strange 3 last January. Speaking with Variety, Cumberbatch revealed Marvel has been very open about talking to him regarding Doctor Strange’s future in the franchise and where to take the character in his next solo movie. The actor believes “there’s potent stuff” to tap into with the hero. Based on Cumberbatch’s recent Doctor Strange 3 comments, how the July 2027 date fits between the next two Avengers movies, and more, I believe Doctor Strange 3 will be revealed as the MCU‘s mystery 2027 movie.
