Keanu Reeves “Is Not So Happy” With Constantine 2 Scripts According To Original Co-Star

Constantine 2 may be facing some creative troubles, as one of the stars from the original DC film has stated that Keanu Reeves is “not so happy” with the script. DC Studios remains committed to telling Elseworlds stories at the same time as James Gunn’s DC Universe, and Reeves’ Constantine movie from 2005 is one of the standalone franchises that is potentially making a comeback. While Constantine 2 has been in development since September 2022, the DC sequel is seemingly dealing with some complications.

In a new interview with The Direct, Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the original Constantine movie, shared some new details about the upcoming Constantine 2 sequel regarding Reeves’ feelings on the script development. According to the Swedish star, Reeves is not entirely happy with the screenplay, as Stormare shared the following:

It’s a lot of back and forth, because… I think Keanu [Reeves], which I know pretty good, is not so happy with the scripts and usually what comes out of the studios… Because the first one wasn’t that successful in the beginning, it became a sleeper and became a cult movie, and now it is one of the biggest cult movies ever. But to do a sequel, the studios want to have, you know, cars flying in the air. They want to have people doing flip-flops and fighting action scenes.

And I think Keanu says, ‘I’ve done ‘John Wick.’ This movie is spiritual. It’s about demons and regular people. And I wanted to keep it that way.’ And we talked about that. I want to do God coming down exactly the same way, but in a black suit and looking more or less like Lucifer from the first one. I’m 12 years older, so it’s going to be hard to, you know, completely imitate the first movie. But, I think from Keanu, he wants to do a sequel that is very close to the first one.

What Peter Stormare’s Keanu Reeves Comments Mean For Constantine 2

While it is definitely concerning to hear Reeves is seemingly not thrilled with how the Constantine 2 story is coming along, it’s key to remember that, so far, the actor has not publicly commented on the matter, and any potential concerns about the script will likely be worked through during this part of the creative process. However, the idea there may be some studio demand to have Constantine 2 be bigger isn’t shocked. With the current nature of the comic book movie genre, Hollywood studios tend to try to look for this type of adaptation to have a huge impact.

As the original Constantine director, Francis Lawrence, is back to helm the sequel, time will tell if perhaps they will find a middle ground with the Constantine 2 movie script that Akiva Goldsman was hired to write. If things don’t move in the right direction, it wouldn’t be shocking if Constantine 2 becomes another scrapped comic book film. With DC Studios now in existence, Gunn has made it clear that no projects move forward until there is a solid script in place, which needs to be the case for Constantine 2.

Stormare’s comments underline the importance of getting the Constantine 2 script just right, since the ideal story for the film would resonate with both the cast and prospective viewers. With Reeves’ Constantine 2 movie being dependent on Keanu Reeves’ involvement, hopefully the sequel can bring back what the starring actor most appreciated about the first film, while also satisfying executives at the same time. But for now, the world will have to wait and see what becomes of Constantine 2.
