Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein gets a new trailer, hyping the director’s upcoming take on the iconic monster. Based on the 1818 book by Mary Shelley, del Toro’s next film features Oscar Isaac in the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, an egotistical scientist who brings to life a monstrous creation. Marking his follow-up to Nightmare Alley (2021), del Toro’s Frankenstein features an impressive cast, which includes Jacob Elordi as The Monster, Mia Goth as Elizabeth, Christoph Waltz as Harlander, and Ralph Ineson as Professor Krempe.
At Saturday night’s TUDUM event, Netflix shares a new teaser for Frankenstein, revealing more about del Toro’s dark and tragic vision for the legendary monster story. The trailer confirms that the film will arrive on the streamer in November, and it teases an especially Gothic visual style as Isaac’s тιтular scientist becomes obsessed with giving life to his creation. Del Toro’s Film Will Be Faithful To The Source Material
Frankenstein is del Toro’s follow-up to Nightmare Alley in 2021, which was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture. The trailer affirms that the director will very much be working within his wheelhouse for this next movie, as many of del Toro’s past films have been in the Gothic horror realm. While there have been many past takes on Shelley’s Frankenstein, the latest trailer makes clear that this will be a fairly faithful adaptation.
Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t provide a clear look at Elordi’s appearance as Frankenstein’s Monster, but it does reveal that this version of the Monster will be particularly violent and dangerous. Past actors who have played Frankenstein’s monster include Boris Karloff, Rory Kinnear, Robert De Niro, and Christopher Lee, so Elordi certainly has big shoes to fill.
Elordi is best known for his roles in Euphoria, The Kissing Booth (2018), and Saltburn (2023).
What’s more, del Toro’s Frankenstein also isn’t the only adaptation of Shelley’s work set to arrive in the near future, with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, which features Christian Bale as the Monster, releasing next year. That film, however, will seemingly take more creative liberties with the source material, as it takes place in 1930s Chicago. While there will be two Frankenstein movies releasing over the next year, both are poised to be very different.

Elordi Is Already A Highlight
Del Toro continues to be one of the most interesting directors working in Hollywood today. Whether it’s Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013), or The Shape of Water (2017), the director’s film have a truly unique visual aesthetic and tone, and Frankenstein looks, in this sense, to be classic del Toro. The upcoming film will also mark the first collaboration between del Toro and Isaac, and it will be especially interesting to see how the pair collaborate.
The Frankenstein cast alone makes the film worth getting excited about, and Elordi’s role as the Monster looks to be an interesting against-type role for the Saltburn star. If the film is well-received, it could propell him to even great heights as a dramatic actor. While many questions remain about del Toro’s upcoming creation, it’s evidently one to look forward to.
