Mission: Impossible 8 Debuts With Huge Global Box Office Milestone, Already A Top 10 Movie Of 2025

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has surpᴀssed a huge global box office milestone during its opening weekend. The new movie, which was directed and co-written by Christopher McQuarrie, is the eighth installment in the action movie franchise, which stars Tom Cruise as superspy Ethan Hunt. The Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning release kicked off over Memorial Day weekend 2025 alongside the debut of the Disney live-action remake Lilo & Sтιтch.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is projected to reach a worldwide gross of $190 million by the end of its opening weekend. This total comes from an added $127 million from international markets on top of its projected 3-day domestic opening weekend gross of $63 million, which marks the best of the entire franchise.

In addition to making it just the ninth movie of the year to pᴀss the $150 million global milestone, this total sees it landing at No. 8 on the chart of the highest-grossing movies of 2025 so far, worldwide. It is only behind Snow White, Sinners, Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World, A Minecraft Movie, Ne Zha 2, and fellow new release Lilo & Sтιтch.

What This Means For Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

It Still Has A Way To Climb

If The Final Reckoning can maintain its lead over the previous movies, it could potentially become the highest-grossing installment in the popular Tom Cruise franchise. In fact, its $190 million global debut sees it taking just a few days to gross nearly half of what the lowest-grossing installment, Mission: Impossible 2, earned during its entire run in 2006, so the new movie could quickly begin climbing that chart. Below, see a breakdown of the box office performance of the previous seven Mission: Impossible movies:

тιтle

Worldwide Box Office

Mission: Impossible (1996)

$457,697,994

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

$549,588,516

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

$399,387,745

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

$694,713,230

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

$688,858,992

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

$786,626,183

Mission: Impossible – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning (2023)

$565,755,394

However, the fact that the new movie is the installment with the highest price tag means that it will have to become the highest-grossing entry just to break even. The reported budget of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is roughly $400 million, which could place its estimated break-even point as high as $1 billion. It would likely have to become the highest-grossing installment by a wide margin in order to be the most profitable.

Our Take On The Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Global Debut

It Could Make Up For The Previous Installment

Regardless of its budgetary considerations, if Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning becomes the highest-grossing of the eight movies, it will show the franchise in a considerable upswing after the previous installment, 2023’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning Part One, became a disappointment by grossing $571.1 million against its reported budget of $291 million. This may not be enough of a boost for the franchise to continue into a ninth installment, but if it isn’t, it can at least end the series on a high.
