Amazon’s new James Bond franchise desperately needs a fresh face to keep things interesting if the series is going to be successful, and the perfect candidate has just stepped forward. Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has admitted he’d be interested in directing a Bond movie, leading audiences to speculate that he’ll be the visionary behind the inevitable Bond 26. Although nothing has been confirmed, Cuarón’s enthusiasm is a very good sign after all the muddled backstage politics that have brought the next installment to this state.
Although Cuarón isn’t particularly well-known within the spy genre, the director has proven on several occasions that his talents are not limited to any particular style of filmmaking. He’s a very versatile and flexible director, which are crucial traits in somebody working alongside a major studio to make a franchise blockbuster. There’s still no actor attached to Bond 26 and no script officially written, but getting Cuarón on board would be a huge first step.
Alfonso Cuarón Can Give James Bond A Fresh Start After Daniel Craig’s Era
Cuarón’s James Bond Would Have A Totally New Style
There are very few directors who could totally reinvent the James Bond franchise, like Cuarón. The filmmaker has been responsible for some of the most progressive and inventive action movies of the past few decades, with projects like Children of Men and Gravity pushing the genre forward in fresh, interesting ways. If he could bring just an ounce of this stylistic flair to James Bond, there’s every possibility that Amazon’s rebooted franchise could begin to outshine the previous movies.
When it comes to rebooting James Bond, “different” is key. Plenty of long-time Bond audiences are immediately skeptical of Amazon’s Bond acquisition because of how content-driven it will surely be, so anything that seems overly familiar or derivative is only going to fan those flames even further. However, trying something totally new and experimental is sure to catch some attention, proving that the next “phase” of James Bond isn’t just a rehash of old ideas. This is exactly what Cuarón is needed for.
Alfonso Cuarón Is A Better Director Choice For Bond 26 Than Christopher Nolan
Nolan Would Be Fun, But There’s Something Unique About Cuarón’s Style
The idea of bringing in an acclaimed filmmaker for Bond 26 is nothing new; ever since it was announced that Amazon would be taking creative control of the franchise, the studio has been looking for a worthy candidate to helm their first movie. Christopher Nolan’s name was reportedly in the conversation for a while, and that certainly would have been interesting, but Cuarón is ultimately a better choice. Tenet has already shown us what Nolan is capable of doing within the spy genre, but it’s something that remains unexplored (and thus more interesting) in Cuarón’s filmography.
Plus, Nolan is clearly trying to drift away from IP like James Bond by creating bold, daring, original projects like Oppenheimer and The Odyssey. Although he’s expressed interest in working on James Bond in the past, the projects he’s currently working on seem much more interesting. Nolan’s best movies tend to be those without too much studio interference, and that’s not something that would be guaranteed on Bond 26.
If Alfonso Cuarón Wants To Direct Bond 26, Amazon Should Make It Happen
The Director Clearly Has Some Enthusiasm For The Franchise
Ultimately, the fact that Cuarón has expressed interest in joining the James Bond franchise already should be enough incentive for Amazon to make that happen. They’ve been looking for the perfect director for a long time, and a brilliant candidate has clearly put himself forward. There’s no reason this couldn’t happen. Additionally, Cuarón and David Heyman (who is producing Amazon’s Bond reboot) have previously worked together on Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, making this reunion even more likely in the future.
