New Fear Street Movie Tops Netflix Global Charts Despite 31% RT Score

Fear Street: Prom Queen became no. 1 on Netflix’s global weekly chart in less than a week. Released on May 23, the fourth installment after the 2021 trilogy, 1994, 1978, and 1666, is the first standalone movie in the Fear Street series. Starring India Fowler as Lori Granger, Suzanna Son as Megan Rogers, Fina Strazza as Tiffany Falconer, and others, the movie sees the masked slasher return to Shadyside.

According to Netflix, Fear Street: Prom Queen debuted with 10.7 million views in just three days, with 16 million total hours watched. This was enough to claim the top spot on the streamer’s chart after Nonnas dominated it for two weeks. The movie is followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish at no. 2 with 8.7 million views, while the Vince Vaughn movie sits at no. 3, having garnered 8.4 million views and 16 million total viewing hours.

What This Means For Fear Street: Prom Queen

Fear Street: Prom Queen’s Debut Viewership Doesn’t Fall Short Despite Poor Reception

It’s been four years since the original trilogy’s release, but it appears that Fear Street‘s brand has left an impression among viewers. Prom Queen is so far the series’ worst-received тιтle and the only one to receive a “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 31% critical approval rate and a 28% audience approval rate. Despite not being certified as fresh as the original trilogy, the movie’s strong debut indicates its popularity and promise.

In 2021, Fear Street Part 1: 1994 debuted with 16.6 million hours of views, followed by the sequel, which debuted with 16 million hours. The threequel was the most watched, rounding up to 20.8 million hours viewed during its debut week. Given that it’s only been three days since Prom Queen‘s release, the fourth installment’s viewership will likely increase toward the week’s end. It’s very possible that the fourth installment might end up competing with 1666 for the biggest debut in the series.

R.L. Stine, the author of the Fear Street book series, has indicated that at least three more movies are in development, and the new slasher movie’s strong viewership is no doubt a good sign, paving the way for future тιтles. Regardless of the reception, it seems that there’s still a lot of interest in the slasher franchise. In fact, many cult-classic horror movies receive surprisingly poor reviews, but that doesn’t prevent them from occupying a place in the genre.

As ScreenRant‘s review for Fear Street: Prom Queen pointed out, the movie’s best highlight is its retro setting and how close it feels to an 80s slasher movie. In terms of originality and innovation, the latest тιтle falls short in comparison to the best of the original trilogy. In other words, the new Netflix horror movie still stands out in the franchise, just in the way many would have expected.
