Final Destination Bloodlines Box Office Breaks The Horror Franchise’s 16-Year Highest-Grossing Record

Final Destination Bloodlines has broken a 16-year franchise record. The new horror movie, which follows college student Stefani Reyes (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) learning that she and her family are being targeted by Death itself, is the sixth installment in the supernatural horror franchise. The Final Destination Bloodlines release kicked off the weekend before Memorial Day, taking No. 1 at the domestic box office and ending the two-week reign of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Thunderbolts*. Additionally, its staggering worldwide debut of $102 million saw it outgross the entire run of 2003’s Final Destination 2 in just three days.

Per The Numbers, Final Destination Bloodlines has now reached a cumulative worldwide gross of $189.5 million thanks to its box office take on Tuesday, May 27. This sees it creep past the $187.4 million earned by 2009’s The Final Destination to make the new movie the highest-grossing installment in the franchise after just 12 days in theaters. That movie and its immediate follow-up, 2011’s Final Destination 5, were previously the highest-grossing installments, partially off the back of being released in 3D, which is a format that comes with increased ticket prices.

What This Means For Final Destination Bloodlines

It Is Charting A New Course For The Franchise

Not only has Bloodlines become the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, it has done so with impressive speed. In fact, at the time of writing, its domestic haul of $94.3 million alone surpᴀsses the entire worldwide run of Final Destination 2, which only grossed $90.4 million over the course of its entire time in theaters. Below, see a breakdown of how the new installment’s performance compares to the previous Final Destination movies:

тιтle

Domestic Debut

Worldwide Box Office

Final Destination (2000)

$10 million

$112 million

Final Destination 2 (2003)

$16 million

$90.4 million

Final Destination 3 (2006)

$19.2 million

$112.8 million

The Final Destination (2009)

$27.4 million

$187.4 million

Final Destination 5 (2011)

$18 million

$155 million

Final Destination Bloodlines (2025)

$51.6 million

$189.5 million (and counting)

While the reported $50 million budget of Final Destination Bloodlines is the largest of the franchise (the previous two installments’ reported budgets are the second-highest at $40 million), its box office performance has also overcome that hurdle. Because movies typically need to earn back two and a half times their budgets, this places the new installment’s estimated break-even point somewhere around $125 million, a total that it has already blasted past.

Another Sequel Seems Inevitable

If the new movie continues racing up the chart at its current speed, it could widen the gap between itself and the 2009 installment considerably. While Final Destination Bloodlines had a harsher sophomore weekend drop (-62.5%) than The Final Destination (-54.9%), precedent shows that it could still earn at least $14 million more in domestic theaters alone by the end of its run. This would leave big shoes to fill for the possible Final Destination 7, which has not yet been greenlit, but most likely will be soon, considering how well Bloodlines is performing.
