Comedian Conan O’Brien is joining the cast of Toy Story 5 in a mysterious new role. The upcoming Pixar sequel, directed by Andrew Stanton of Finding Nemo and WALL-E, was announced nearly a year ago and will explore Woody, Buzz, and more Toy Story characters among the growing usage of technology. O’Brien has hosted many popular talk shows, including Conan, and has previously voiced himself in The Simpsons and The Riddler in The Lego Batman Movie.
After the casting was first announced at Disney’s Licensing Expo presentation, O’Brien recently took to Instagram and confirmed that he would be joining Toy Story 5 and portraying a character named Smarty Pants, but additional details remain unknown. The comedian shared his excitement for the movie and teased that Smarty Pants is “the best character of them all,” after joking that he wanted to voice Woody or Buzz. Check out his post below:

What This Means For Toy Story 5
There Will Be More New Characters
While Woody and Buzz, voiced by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, respectively, will be back for the sequel, how the beloved characters and Smarty Pants get along remains unclear. However, given some of his past acting roles and comedic background, O’Brien will likely make Smarty Pants a memorable franchise addition. Because Toy Story 5 features technology and electronic devices, there could be even more new characters introduced, along with other familiar toys, including Combat Carl (played by Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson after original voice actor Carl Weathers pᴀssed away).
Toy Story continues to launch new characters to appear opposite Woody and Buzz, and by having them take on various roles throughout the animated franchise, it may be hard to predict what kind of effect Smarty Pants has. When Toy Story 4 premiered, audiences quickly became enthusiastic about Forky (voiced by Tony Hale), the plastic googly-eyed utensil Bonnie made, and other toys, including Gabby Gabby and Duke Caboom, were found at a carnival and antique store. Lotso, who turned out to be a villainous, but distinctive stuffed bear, was also introduced in the later sequels.

Conan O’Brien Could Bring A Lot Of Humor
The eagerness by O’Brien surrounding his involvement in Toy Story 5 should make longtime fans more excited about Smarty Pants. His comedic talent makes him a perfect addition to the already cherished cast of Hanks, Allen, Joan Cusack, Annie Potts, and more. Despite so much of his character being unknown, O’Brien will likely bring a humorous touch to Smarty Pants, and it will be interesting to see how audiences react. Should Smartypants play a larger part in Toy Story 5, he could easily become a standout and new fan favorite.
