Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Sounds Like It’s Fully Embracing An Element The Monsterverse Has Barely Used

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could take the franchise to the next level thanks to an exciting aspect gaining a bigger focus. It’s amazing how far Legendary’s Monsterverse has come since 2014’s Godzilla. The film reimagined Godzilla as a protector of Earth, battling тιтans who emerge to wreak havoc. Following Kong’s introduction in 2017 and a sequel for Gojira, the two creatures finally duked it out in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. This set the stage for them to become allies, a theme that will carry through with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

The third Monsterverse movie pairing Godzilla and Kong has made major strides recently after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s success. There’s a mostly new cast of human characters, alongside a few returning familiar faces. And with the main story unknown, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s announcement of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova‘s тιтle leaves room for a lot of speculation about what will happen. This includes various theories about what villain will be included, and a hint at the franchise fully embracing an underused element.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’s тιтle Suggests A Very Cosmic Film

Earth may not be the only planet that has тιтans

On May 9., Warner Bros. shared a video announcing that the next Godzilla x Kong film is in production and confirmed the тιтle, Supernova. A supernova is a powerful explosion of a star, possibly collapsing into a neutron star or a black hole. That тιтle suggests the film could get cosmic, introducing тιтans from above rather than below. That’s a big reason why cosmic villains like SpaceGodzilla and Gigan quickly gained popularity as possible villains.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova embracing cosmic elements is a unique direction for the Monsterverse, but one that feels right at this point in the franchise. The series has so far been almost entirely focused on how these creatures connect to Earth’s history, unraveling the secret histories, societies, and locations tied to Godzilla, Kong, and other monsters. Whether its Skull Island or Hollow Earth, these movies have rarely looked toward the stars, as Supernova appears to be doing.

The Monsterverse Has Barely Utilized Cosmic Elements So Far

Most of the conflicts with тιтans have developed on Earth

The Monsterverse hasn’t scratched the surface of what’s out there beyond Earth. The closest the franchise has come to going cosmic was with King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The film briefly mentions that Ghidorah is an alien, but it doesn’t go too deep into where he’s from or how he got to Earth. That’s left a desire for the franchise to steer the narrative and its characters in that direction more often, but the last two entries about Godzilla and Kong failed to do so.

King Ghidorah’s death didn’t allow the Monsterverse to have a natural path forward to explore the dragon’s alien origin. The movies instead doubled down on its Earthly focus, adding villains who have been tied to Earth’s history for centuries. There have still been some sci-fi elements included, but tying the mythology to outer space hasn’t been done. Now with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova seemingly set to give viewers a more galactic story, it could be worth exploring Ghidorah’s background and how it connects to Godzilla, especially if it plans on introducing cosmic creatures.

The Monsterverse Embracing A Cosmic Focus Can Help Set Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Apart

Supernova needs to get the franchise away from Hollow Earth

Hollow Earth has been a primary setting for the last two Godzilla vs. Kong films and in the Monarch series. While it’s crucial to the Monsterverse and has many interesting features, it’s starting to become redundant. Going galactic can be what this franchise needs to give it new life, especially after the last film was a mᴀssive hit. Alien тιтans may push the boundaries of nonsensical storylines for this series, but Godzilla does have a history of fighting aliens.

Theories suggest the film could have two possible villains: Gigan or SpaceGodzilla. Gigan is an alien cyborg kaiju, who debuted in 1972’s Godzilla vs. Gigan. He is deployed alongside Ghidorah to conquer the earth. However, SpaceGodzilla seems more likely based on the тιтle. SpaceGodzilla was created after bits of Godzilla’s DNA fell into a black hole. The тιтle Godzilla x Kong: Supernova indicates that a black hole could play a factor in the story, meaning SpaceGodzilla could be the next antagonist. Either way, it’ll be thrilling to see how Kong and Godzilla fight an intergalactic foe.
