After Superman & Lois‘ emotional ending, I’m glad to see one story element that was a highlight of the show appears to also be present in the DCU Superman movie. As one of the biggest superheroes of all time, there have been plenty of live-action Superman movies and shows over the years, boasting several varying levels of success. Though depictions of Superman can often split audiences, the recent decades have provided a wonderful range of takes on the Man of Steel, showcasing him in the movie and television worlds and in live-action and animation alike.
Given it debuts the next big-screen version of the iconic DC hero, it’s no surprise that the DCU Superman movie has been the subject of so many conversations, especially with this backdrop in mind, as there are so many different iterations of the character to compare and contrast David Corenswet’s with. Superman‘s new movie trailer adds yet more ways to do so, even promisingly drawing some clear comparisons between Superman & Lois not long after its finale with the trailer’s opening scene.
Superman & Lois Was One Of The Best Looks At The тιтular Duo In Live-Action History
As a series that focused more on Superman as a husband and father – and how he and Lois navigated their lives, and dealt with Clark’s secret idenтιтy and revealing it to their sons – Superman & Lois was naturally in a position that allowed it to delve more into the dynamic between the pair. However, the acting talents of Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch – combined with a story that takes care to give a detailed look at what life would be like for this couple and the challenges they would face in their decades-long relationship – elevated this story aspect of the series yet further.
Over the course of the four seasons of the show, we get an in-depth look at Clark and Lois, and how their relationship has factored into every aspect of their lives, with them facing all the obstacles thrown their way as a team. While the main focus is understandably placed on the couple’s chemistry and compᴀssion for one another over the years – making Superman’s seeming death at the start of season 4 all the more gutwrenching due to Lois’ clear grief – the show also isn’t afraid to show them challenging one another and driving one another to be better.
Superman & Lois‘ finale released in December 2024, placing less than a year between the show’s ending and the debut of the DCU’s Superman movie.
This depiction of the show’s тιтiular characters is also helped by the fact the series portrays them throughout essentially their entire adult lives, going from their early days together at the Daily Planet to them becoming parents, grandparents, and eventually pᴀssing away, leading to an emotional ending wherein the pair reunite in the afterlife. With all of this in mind, Superman & Lois in many ways serves as a perfect example of how to portray the characters and their rapport, and a similarly important reminder of how crucial Lois Lane is as a DC character.
Superman’s Newest Trailer Promises A Similar Dynamic Between Its Own Versions Of Clark Kent & Lois Lane
Since other Superman releases can tend to focus less on Lois Lane and Clark’s relationship with her, it wasn’t clear from the outset whether the DCU Superman movie would be able to follow in Superman & Lois‘ footsteps in this regard – particularly since the first DCU movie also needs to set up the entire universe at the same time. However, those involved in the project repeatedly insisted that Lois wouldn’t be overlooked in the newest on-screen story, and the newest Superman trailer reinforces this idea considerably with its first look at a more extended scene between the two.
In the opening scene of the new trailer, Lois does a mock interview with Clark, with the pair initially bantering about the prospect of Clark being interviewed as Superman before the conversation turns more serious, as Lane asks some more complicated questions about the Man of Steel’s recent heroic endeavors. In the initial joking around, there’s a clear chemistry between Corenswet’s Superman and Brosnahan’s Lois Lane that’s similar to the dynamic previously shown between Hoechlin and Tullock’s versions of the characters, which provides immediately promising in terms of what the film couple’s story will be like on-screen.
However, the new trailer also takes care to show that the DCU duo are also willing to challenge one another, and that their relationship is built on a foundation of more than just mutual attraction. Lois isn’t afraid to communicate to Clark some of the more negative ways his actions as a hero are currently perceived, and while Kent doesn’t exactly seem pleased, the collision of their beliefs allows Superman to explain what truly motivates him, and to cement said motivations further by actively testing them in this way, much as Superman & Lois‘ Lois also challenged Clark in this regard.
Why Getting Superman & Lois Lane’s Relationship Right Is So Crucial For The DCU
While the DCU’s Superman movie has a whole lot it arguably needs to nail in order to both create a successful adaptation of one of the most famous and genre-defining superheroes of all time, the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane is a crucial cornerstone of this. Clark’s connection to Lois is not only a way to show a more human side to the immensely strong Kryptonian powerhouse, but also gives narratives a way to explore the world and what superheroes mean through the couple and their attempts to understand and help one another in this often larger-than-life setting.
Both in the comics and in movies and shows, Superman often struggles more with the non-physical difficulties of his superhero career – like keeping his secret idenтιтy or navigating working with the US government. Lois’ perspective and determination to do the right thing often serve as a guiding light for him, letting Lane be someone he can argue these points with and seek consolation from about his unique challenges, which makes the relationship between the two mᴀssively important, especially since Lois tends to be a character who has an understanding of the wider world that can help flesh out the DCU.
This works effectively to make both characters integral to DC’s world, and also means their depiction in the new Superman trailer bodes well for the DCU movie itself. However, it’s also clear that their relationship won’t be entirely straightforward based on their conflict in the trailer’s opening, which makes the prospect of seeing how the bond develops between the focused Daily Planet reporter and the co-worker she discovers is keeping a superhero secret all the more interesting.
