The Movie Quentin Tarantino Refuses To Watch

Quentin Tarantino is not only an acclaimed director, but also a lover of films, yet there is one movie he simply refuses to watch. Tarantino began his career in 1992 with his ground-breaking heist movie Reservoir Dogs. While that film established him as a truly unique and exciting new voice in American cinema, it also showed that he was a filmmaker who was inspired by a lot of movies that came before. His projects are filled with homages to classics that came before, showing that he is a filmmaker who truly embraces his love of cinema.

Tarantino has also not been shy about sharing his own thoughts on movies, with his eclectic tastes providing a lot of entertainment. Tarantino has praised Sergio Leone’s Dollar’s Trilogy as a cinematic achievement while also praising the Freaky Friday remake. He counts himself among the many fans of Top Gun: Maverick and has also defended panned movies like Joker 2. However, one of the most surprising Tarantino opinions is his love of a certain franchise and his refusal to watch one of its entries.

Quentin Tarantino Won’t Watch Toy Story 4

Tarantino Praised The First Three Movies As One Of The Great Movie Trilogies

Given the violence in Quentin Tarantino’s movies, it can be a little hard to imagine the director watching and enjoying Pixar movies. However, the filmmaker has gone on record with high praise for the first three Toy Story movies, which has also led him to declare that he will never watch Toy Story 4. In the same interview in which Tarantino praised the brilliance of the Dollars Trilogy, he also explained that he feels the Toy Story movies improved with each subsequent entry, leading to the third film.

Tarantino also gave specific praise to Toy Story 3 and the way it worked as the perfect ending to this story, saying:

I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the “Toy Story” trilogy. I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s “A Fistful of Dollars,” “For a Few Dollars More” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” In the case of “Toy Story,” the third one is just magnificent. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. And if you’ve seen the other two, it’s just devastating.

However, given that Toy Story 3 made for such an ideal ending to the first three movies, Tarantino also expressed disappointment that they returned to the franchise with Toy Story 4. Because of how perfectly the story ended, he has admitted that he will never watch the fourth movie, despite loving the first three. His reasoning is that the story ended and doing more would simply be a disappointment:

But the thing is, then three years later or something they did a fourth, and I have no desire to see it. You literally ended the story as perfect as you could, so no, I don’t care if it’s good. I’m done.

Quentin Tarantino’s Toy Story 4 Criticism Makes Pixar’s Fifth Entry More Confusing

The Toy Story Franchise Continues On Despite Being Well Past Its Greatest Moment

Most fans of the Toy Story franchise did not feel as strongly as Quentin Tarantino when it came to avoiding the fourth movie. Toy Story 4 ended up being the highest-grossing entry in the series, making $434 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). While it received the lowest score of the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, that isn’t so bad considering it still received 97%. However, despite the solid reception, there are many people who validated Tarantino’s opinion and felt Toy Story 4 did not justify returning to the franchise after the perfect conclusion of Toy Story 3.

Tarantino questioning why Toy Story would harm its legacy by making another movie backs up the hesitation many fans have about the plans for the upcoming Toy Story 5. Even if Toy Story 4 was seen as a solid Pixar movie, there are many who feel that the franchise is pushing itself too far, abandoning that perfect trilogy and simply making a long-running franchise that doesn’t know when to stop. Indeed, it could be that Toy Story 5 is another great movie, but that doesn’t take away the fact that the franchise has lost something it will never get back.

There will be a time when they decide to stop making Toy Story movies, but it is hard to imagine how they could possibly top or even come close to reaching the emotional satisfaction of Toy Story 3‘s ending. As soon as Toy Story 4 was made, the franchise lost something special. While there is a lot to enjoy in Toy Story 4, Quentin Tarantino may have a point in avoiding it to preserve the perfection of the first three movies.
