What The New Image Means For The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Even though the story of The Fantastic Four: First Steps focuses on Marvel villain Galactus and the heroes’ fight against him, the new image serves as a good reminder that the MCU movie will show glimpses of how Marvel’s First Family became these iconic heroes. While Marvel Studios has confirmed that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will not be a full-on origin story, per Kevin Feige, there are still moments from their backstory that are crucial to showcase. One of them is their journey to space, which, in the Marvel Comics canon, is what changes their lives forever and makes them the heroes audiences know.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps image also highlights the unique look of the 1960s that will be explored in the team’s MCU reboot, as this movie takes place on another Earth. In this reality, the 1960s have a more retro-futuristic design, which includes the astronauts’ suits and the technology they use for space travel in this universe, in comparison to Earth-616. The image also highlights how letting The Fantastic Four: First Steps be set in its own continuity allows Marvel Studios to find new approaches to exploring time periods in the MCU, even in other realities.

Our Take On The Fantastic Four: First Steps Image

Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) looking thoughtful in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

While time will tell how much of their origin is depicted in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it’s still great to see, through this new image, that there will be moments dedicated to their backstory, which will likely be flashbacks for the most part. That is also why it’ll be intriguing to follow the story of The Fantastic Four: First Steps characters in Avengers: Doomsday, especially after going from one reality to Earth-616, which doesn’t have the 1960s-inspired design to it. With only two months left before The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters, the MCU reboot of Marvel’s First Family is looking stronger than ever.
