A Minecraft Movie’s Herobrine Easter Egg Explained

A Minecraft Movie includes a Herobrine Easter egg that is easy to miss. A Minecraft Movie was clearly made by a creative team who love and have a deep knowledge of the video game, which is great since it had been in development since 2014. While reviews for A Minecraft Movie are mixed, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it an underwhelming score of 4 out of 10, there are a lot of Easter eggs included for longtime fans of the game.

Even though its story is quite shallow, A Minecraft Movie’s Easter eggs still make it an enjoyable experience. Additionally, A Minecraft Movie includes many hilarious moments that will ensure that most viewers are entertained. By including actors like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who has been sillier than ever in some of his most recent roles, A Minecraft Movie primarily focuses on comedy. However, one surprising scene in A Minecraft Movie includes hints of horror, and actually features a nod to Herobrine.

Steve’s Glowing White Eyes In A Minecraft Movie References Herobrine

Henry Sees Herobrine In A Vision In A Minecraft Movie

Not long after getting sucked into the Overworld, Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn meet Steve, who has spent years in the block-filled dimension. Since the original Earth Crystal is destroyed not long after their arrival in the Overworld, Steve tells A Minecraft Movie’s characters that they need to go to Woodland Mansion to retrieve a replacement Crystal. About halfway through the film, Steve, Garrett, and Henry make it to Woodland Mansion, which is the home of several dangerous illagers.

Steve and Garrett devise a plan to distract the illagers while Henry sneaks upstairs to find the Earth Crystal. Downstairs, Steve and Garrett are hilariously forced to fight the chicken jockey in A Minecraft Movie. Meanwhile, Henry encounters a much more dangerous creature in the storage room. While looking for the Earth Crystal, Henry comes across an Enderman. Even though Steve had previously warned Henry not to look into its eyes, he accidently does.

If you look at an enderman in the Minecraft video game, it will simply move towards you and attack. However, the enderman in A Minecraft Movie shows Henry visions of his friends turning on him. This is a shocking scene in A Minecraft Movie since it completely switches the tone of the film. During this vision, Henry listens to all the other characters, even his sister, criticizing him. All the characters in the vision have distinctive glowing purple eyes, but Steve actually has white eyes instead. This is a pretty obvious nod to Herobrine, who also has white eyes.

Herobrine’s History In Minecraft Explained

Stories About Herobrine Have Existed Since The Early Days Of Minecraft

While Herobrine is not an official character from Minecraft, he is by far the most popular fan-made character who is ᴀssociated with the game. Herobrine has never actually been in an unmodded version of Minecraft, but several fans started sharing stories of seeing a creepy white-eyed character not long after the game’s release. In 2010, players started sharing stories on forums of their experiences seeing Herobrine and his distinctive white eyes in dark caves or in the fog. These stories became so popular that many players started to believe Herobrine was a secret character in the game.

Some believe that these stories are real and that Herobrine is actually in the game, but there is no evidence of that in the source code.

As the legend of Herobrine became more popular, it was theorized that the mysterious character was actually the brother of Notch, the creator of Minecraft. In one forum post, a player stated that they emailed Notch to ask whether he had a brother, to which he responded, “I did, but he is no longer with us.” This email exchange likely never actually happened, and in real life, Notch never had a brother. However, stories like this turned Herobrine into a fascinating figure for fans of the video game.

For years, fans asked if Herobrine would ever actually be added to the game. Some believe that these stories are real and that Herobrine is actually in the game, but there is no evidence of that in the source code. Both Notch and Jeb, who took over as the lead developer of Minecraft in 2011, have stated that Herobrine will likely never be officially added to the game. Therefore, despite how intriguing some of these stories are, it would be surprising if Herobrine is ever actually added to Minecraft.

A Minecraft Movie’s Herobrine Easter Egg Was Reportedly An Accident

A Minecraft Movie’s Herobrine Easter Egg Was Apparently A VFX Mistake

Viewers who know the lore of the game instantly got excited when they saw the Herobrine Easter egg in A Minecraft Movie. This Easter egg keeps the legend of Herobrine alive and teases that he could potentially show up again in the movie franchise. However, according to producer Torfi Frans Olafsson, A Minecraft Movie’s Herobrine Easter egg was a mistake. In a post on X following the release of A Minecraft Movie, Olafsson claimed that Steve’s eyes were supposed to be purple like all the other characters, but that the VFX team ran out of time. Based on Olafsson’s explanation of the mistake, it is pretty clear that the Herobrine Easter egg in A Minecraft Movie wasn’t actually an accident. Turning Steve’s eyes from white to purple wouldn’t have been hard for the VFX team, so it’s clear that his eyes are white during this vision in A Minecraft Movie on purpose. By including this fake explanation of the accident, Olafsson is playing into the legend of Herobrine, which shows how much he is interested in the lore of the video game.

Will Herobrine Be Incorporated Into Minecraft 2?

Herobrine Could Return In A Sequel To A Minecraft Movie

Jason Momoa holds back Jack Black as Steve and Sebastian Hansen in an important moment in A Minecraft Movie

Despite Olafsson’s claims, A Minecraft Movie’s Herobrine Easter egg was clearly not a mistake, which means that the character could potentially appear once again in a sequel. A sequel to A Minecraft Movie has not yet been officially confirmed, but is very likely since the movie has been a mᴀssive success at the box office. Therefore, if A Minecraft Movie 2 does get made, I would love to see Herobrine appear and potentially haunt the characters. After this Easter egg, it would make perfect sense for Herobrine to show up in a sequel.

While Steve leaves the Overworld at the end of A Minecraft Movie, he will likely return to the block-filled dimension in the sequel. To differentiate itself from the first movie, perhaps A Minecraft Movie 2 could include even more elements of horror, which is where Herobrine could come in. Herobrine could potentially haunt Steve and the other characters while they embark on a new adventure in the sequel. There are a lot of creative things the writers could come up with for Herobrine, which is why I hope to see him in the sequel to A Minecraft Movie.
