Sinners Retook The #1 Box Office Spot From Thunderbolts Just 2 Weeks After The MCU Movie’s Release

Sinners is an undisputed box office success and now, just two weeks after it was pushed into second place because of a brand-new Marvel blockbuster, it’s back on top in the number one spot. Sinners was #1 at the domestic box office for two full weeks, but when Marvel’s Thunderbolts – the first true team-up movie since Avengers: Endgame – came out at the start of the month and knocked Sinners off the top spot on the podium, it stayed at #2 for another two weeks.

According to data from Exhibitor Relations, Sinners retook the #1 spot at the U.S. box office on Thursday, May 15, 2025, bringing in $2.2 million, whereas Thunderbolts brought in $2 million. This was a $400k drop for Thunderbolts day-over-day; however, Sinners maintained its $2.2mm from Wednesday. In total, Sinners has earned approximately $225 million domestically – an astronomical amount for an R-rated original story, especially a period piece that mixes in supernatural elements.

Ryan Coogler & Sinners’ Box Office Success

There was some controversy around Sinners‘ finances when it released. There was a narrative that it needed to make an exorbitant amount of money to be considered a success because of Ryan Coogler’s deal with Warner Bros, but that was, frankly, a ridiculous á´€ssertion. Studios make all sorts of agreements with talent and the one that Coogler received – first-dollar gross, ownership of the film for 25 years – was warranted given his record over the past decade or so.

Coogler went from a film like Fruitvale Station to rebooting one of the longest-running and most beloved sports franchises ever with Creed in 2015. Then he tackled one of the biggest superhero movies ever to release with Black Panther a few years after that. Going from an indie film that made 1,800% more than its budget to a blockbuster film that earned $173 million globally, to a má´€ssive superhero blockbuster that grossed $700 million domestically alone, is astonishing. So if anyone deserved that deal, it’s Coogler – and he’s proven it again with Sinners.

Sinners, unfortunately, won’t remain king of the box office for long, seeing as Final Destination: Bloodlines is out today and is expected to pull in a hefty sum. It’s already taken in $5.5 million in Thursday previews, which will count towards the Friday’s opening day box office total. Still, if Sinners continues to maintain its legs at the box office, it could climb to the upper $200 millions domestically before it really loses steam. It’s already on the cusp of breaking past $300 million worldwide.

Our Take On Sinners’ Box Office Success

Sinners reminds me a lot of Everything Everywhere All At Once. The Oscar-winning film released three years ago and, because of terrific word of mouth, it grew after launch and then maintained a strong presence at the box office for several weeks. Later it came back in the spotlight around the Academy Awards and took home the big prize: Best Picture. It’s certainly possible Sinners could do the same thing this year. As for the box office, it’s an all-around win for Warner Bros, as the studio has dominated this year with multiple hit releases – Minecraft, Sinners, and now Final Destination: Bloodlines via New Line Cinema.
