Brie Larson To Star In JJ Abrams-Produced Monster Horror Movie

Academy Award-winner and Marvel star Brie Larson is set to lead a new creature horror movie produced by J.J. Abrams. Having been before the cameras since she was 8 years of age, Larson would first come to widespread attention off the back of her performance in the 2013 coming-of-age drama Short Term 12. However, it would be Larson’s performance in A24’s Room that would earn her an Academy Award for Best Actress, along with a slew of other accolades, including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award.

Larson also officially became the first solo female lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she made her superhero debut as Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, in 2019. Grossing an impressive $1.13 billion in worldwide box office, Larson’s first MCU entry remains one of the franchise’s top 10 highest-grossing movies and one of the key entries in the Phase 3 suite. However, Larson’s name was notably absent from the list of recently announced Avengers: Doomsday cast members, though speculation is still rife that she will return in either that film or 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Brie Larson Will Lead A “Sweet” and “Terrifying” Horror Film From The Director of Strange Darling

Abrams Has Previously Showered The Director With Praise

While Larson’s potential return as Captain Marvel may be unclear, she will soon be trading in superheroes for horror creatures in a new film from the director of Strange Darling. Written and directed by JT Mollner, the 2023 serial killer thriller may have only had a limited theatrical release, but its critical response was overwhelmingly positive. Currently boasting a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Abrams himself took to social media to praise the movie as a “true cinematic thriller masterpiece” and one of the best films of 2023.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Abrams is now set to produce Fail-Safe with Mollner in the director’s chair and Larson in the leading role. Described as a modern take on the creature horror film, Mollner’s next movie will be told from the perspective of a young boy who discovers a disturbing secret about his mother. Based on a short story by horror author Philip Fracᴀssi, the screenplay was also penned by No One Will Save You’s Brian Duffield. Check out what Abrams had to say about the project below:

With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It’s a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director’s chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true. Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.

This Latest Project Will Likely Offer Strange Darling Director A Major Career Boost

Beyond the already notable involvement of Abrams and Larson, Mollner’s Fail-Safe is already shaping up to be an impressive horror project and one that will likely serve as a major career booster for both himself, and for Duffield. With Duffield’s own 2023 streaming horror film No One Will Save You also proving a hit with critics, this latest undertaking now has the benefit of both Larson’s considerable star power and Abrams’ vast filmmaking experience. This latest announcement offers horror fans every reason to be excited about what could potentially shape up to be an exciting addition to the creature horror genre.
