The тιтle of the newest chapter in the Legendary Monsterverse, Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, may subtly hint at a significant change to the face of Godzilla and Kong’s world in the form of a major death. While there hasn’t been any explanation of the тιтle with the movie still two years away from its release date, the тιтle reveal along with some teaser footage has spawned plenty of theories about the movie’s plot. As the тιтle of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire acted as a hint about the movie’s villain and story, Monsterverse fans believe Supernova does the same.
Godzilla and Kong have now teamed up twice to take on potentially world-ending threats, and Godzilla X Kong: Supernova‘s тιтle points to another begrudging collaboration for the sake of the planet they guard. However, with the threats ramping up over the progression of the Monsterverse, the next villain to challenge Godzilla and Kong could prove to be too much for them to stop on their own. If that’s the case, then Godzilla X Kong: Supernova could truly ratchet up the stakes by including a major monster death that proves just how powerful the new threat is.
Godzilla x Kong 3’s тιтle Is Directly Connected To Death
A Supernova Is Essentially The Death Of A Star
In extremely simple terms, a supernova occurs when a star reaches the end of its lifecycle, and ejects most of its mᴀss into space in a spectacular explosion. It is loosely considered to be the “death” of a star, and what’s left of the original star can sometimes collapse inward by its own gravity, resulting in a black hole. That connection to death, particularly in violent, explosive fashion, could be a harbinger of doom for the characters of the Monsterverse, especially if Legendary brings in one of Godzilla’s biggest and baddest foes from the Toho classics.
The Supernova тιтle Could Mean Either Godzilla Or Kong Will Die
It Would Send Shockwaves Through The Monsteverse
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova could be setting up one of the two key тιтans in the Monsterverse to die, which is not as crazy a notion as it seems on the surface. Godzilla is ancient, lonely, and while he’s the most powerful тιтan on the planet (that we know of) when in his Evolved Godzilla form, he’s not immortal. Godzilla dying in the course of saving the world one last time would be a fitting send-off for the beloved monster, or at least this version of him.
It’s extremely important to note that one of Toho’s three unbreakable rules for Godzilla is that he can not die completely. In the past, when Godzilla has “died”, he was always reborn in some form. For example, when Godzilla died from what amounted to a nuclear heart attack in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, he pᴀssed his life force onto his son, who became the new Godzilla and took his father’s place. Something similar would need to happen in the Monsterverse to follow Toho’s ironclad rules for the character, which would be a great way to ensure that the Monsterverse carries on.
Toho’s three rules for Godzilla are that he can’t completely die, he can’t be shown preying on anything (but particularly eating people), and he can not speak. Some believe that the Monsterverse has already pushed the limits of Godzilla by allowing him to emote (ex. his Godzilla vs. Kong smile), but it’s almost certain that Legendary wouldn’t break one of Toho’s rules as part of their agreement.
Kong, on the other hand, has no such rules. The mᴀssive ape has aged far more quickly than Godzilla, growing in size and strength, and grizzling in appearance since he was first encountered on Skull Island in 1973. While very little is known about a Great Ape’s life cycle, it seems like Kong could be closer to the end of his than the beginning. Fortunately, the Monsterverse has already introduced a “mini-Kong” in the form of Skar King’s son Suko, who could also take up Kong’s mantle (with a little growth, of course) as the defender of the Hollow Earth.
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova May Have A Villain Strong Enough To Kill Godzilla Or Kong
Several Villains From Godzilla’s History Are Downright Lethal
The prevailing theory after the reveal of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova‘s тιтle is that SpaceGodzilla is joining the Monsterverse. His origin relates directly to black holes, so there is an easy connection to the word supernova right off the bat. SpaceGodzilla possesses one of the most incredible arsenals of firepower in the history of Godzilla movies, and he’s widely regarded as one of, if not the strongest enemy Godzilla has ever faced. In fact, in his only movie appearance in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Big G needed serious help to defeat him.
Another option is Gigan, whose appearance seems teased by the bright red light at the center of the Godzilla X Kong: Supernova movie logo. It certainly looks like a representation of Gigan’s Laser Knife, the ᴅᴇᴀᴅly laser that the cyborg kaiju fires out of his forehead just above the red visor in the center of his face. In their first encounter, Gigan left Godzilla bloody and wounded, and he has long been regarded as one of Godzilla’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅliest foes. If Gigan, SpaceGodzilla, or another cosmic villain shows up, Godzilla and Kong could be in serious trouble.
Godzilla Or Kong Dying In Supernova Would Be A Bold Move For The Monsterverse
The Franchise Would Depend On The Surviving Alpha To Carry Things Forward
To be clear, it would be a bold and perhaps even foolhardy move for the Monsterverse to kill one of Godzilla or Kong. The two monsters have proven to be box-office juggernauts, especially when they’re together, and the expanding lore of the Monsterverse certainly seems to have captured the attention of the movie-going public. There are still so many stories to tell in that universe, especially within the Hollow Earth, so either Godzilla or Kong actually dying seems unlikely, even if it would have a mᴀssive emotional impact after 6 movies of build.

However, we can’t rule it out, especially with Kong’s “son” now in the mix. If “Godzilla” and “Kong” basically transition into mantles as opposed to the names of the two individual monsters, then the Monsterverse can continue to tell stories with a new member of their respective species. There is plenty of entertainment to be had from a young, inexperienced Godzilla or Kong taking on some lesser monsters from Toho’s history or original monsters from Legendary. Whether Godzilla or Kong dies or not, Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is poised to shake up the Monsterverse in a major way.
