Thunderbolts* has introduced The New Avengers, but it also sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday

to include a major callback to another Russo Brothers Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

movie. As the Multiverse Saga comes to a close, the latest MCU releases are focusing on the heroes who will play central roles in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This includes several superhero teams, such as The New Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and Sam Wilson’s Avengers.

However, this is an unusual position compared to what was seen at the end of the Infinity Saga. While multiple teams existed, such as The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the heroes were able to come together with relatively little friction. The Avengers were used to working together, and aligning themselves with other heroes made sense to everyone involved. However, Avengers: Doomsday could see a clash that is more reminiscent of Captain America: Civil War.

The Thunderbolts* Introduced The New Avengers To The MCU, But They Aren’t The Only Avengers

The New Avengers Have Some Stiff Compeтιтion

The New Avengers first teamed up in Thunderbolts*. This ragtag group of misfits were able to put aside their differences, and focus on helping others as a team. Despite their murky pasts, the whole team wants to achieve some form of redemption, and when they save New York from the Void, they prove themselves to be capable and trustworthy heroes. As a result, the team was publicly declared The New Avengers by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

However, there is another group of heroes with a claim to the name. Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, was approached by President Ross to form a new Avengers team, but Sam refused to do so under the direction of the President. Despite this, the idea of creating a new superhero team stuck with Sam, and he did go on to form a new team, and take the тιтle of The Avengers for their group.

Sam Wilson’s Avengers May Not Be Government-Sanctioned, But They Won’t Go Down Without A Fight

Sam Wilson Is Prepared To Fight To Defend His Position

While The New Avengers have the backing of the government, it’s no secret that the team may be a little one note. For the most part, they are a group of mercenaries and ᴀssᴀssins who specialize in punching and shooting. Now, they do have several super soldiers, but the only real superheros on the team don’t actually have full control of their powers.

Sam Wilson also doesn’t have superpowers, but, as the new Captain America, it’s very likely he can get a couple of other supers to join his team. But more than that, Sam takes his role as Captain America seriously. He fought hard to get the recognition he deserved, and ensure people could look up to him in a way similar to how they looked up to Steve Rogers. And part of that role is to lead, which is why Sam will definitely fight to ensure he keeps up the legacy, and leads his Avengers forward.

The Avengers Have Been Divided Before

Interestingly, this contention between two groups of heroes who could both lay claim to the name Avengers has been seen in the MCU before. In Captain America: Civil War, the heroes had a major fallout when the issue of the Sokovia Accords was raised, which caused some heroes to actively resist, and others to fall in line with the new government sanctions. And leading either side, Captain America stood with the rebel heroes who didn’t sign, and Iron Man stood with those who signed.

Despite a lengthy friendship, and years of learning to work together, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark fell out, and it led to a civil war between the heroes. Now, Avengers: Doomsday stands to do something similar, with Sam Wilson ᴀssuming the role of the rebellious Captain America, and Bucky Barnes working as a government-sanctioned hero, with both characters having a team of other heroes in their corner.

The Russo Brothers Directed Captain America: Civil War, So It Makes Sense To Include A Callback In Avengers: Doomsday

The Russos Have An Opportunity To Bring Their MCU Stories Full Circle

The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe, are some of the most celebrated MCU directors to date, with several тιтles under their belts. This includes Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, but it also includes films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Civil War. And now, the brothers return to helm Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Considering their history in the MCU, and the way they have handled superhero team-ups and conflicts, it makes sense for the Russo’s to tackle the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga. However, the way the two Avengers teams have been positioned in opposing positions seems a little too perfect to not have this moment serve as a callback to what happened in Civil War. It doesn’t have to be the foundation of Avengers: Doomsday, but the movie could easily include a scene that pays tribute to the epic fallout seen in Captain America: Civil War.
