Superman Director James Gunn Teases The DC Movie’s Next Trailer & Reveals Film Is “More Than” 90% Done

Ahead of Superman’s July release, director James Gunn shares how far along the film is in production as well as when fans can expect another trailer. Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabella Merced, Edi Gathegi, and more, the movie is expected to jumpstart the new DC Universe, a joint effort between Gunn and his DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran. Though it is not an origin story, Superman follows an early-career Clark Kent/Superman struggling to uphold his principle of kindness “in a world that finds kindness old-fashioned.”

Over the last few months, in anticipation of its release, DC has given Superman a teaser trailer, a television spot, a longer sneak peek, and a behind-the-scenes look. Even so, fans are clamoring to see more of Corenswet’s Man of Steel. One such fan, @i.am_mpc, teased Gunn on Threads by telling him toblink twice if the Superman trailer is ready. The latter answered with a series of emojis mimicking blinking twice, meaning even more of Superman will likely be shared soon.

Another user, @leepacebatman, reached out to Gunn for a production update: “How close is the film to being done? 90%?” In response, the director said: “Oh more than that. Just finishing some VFX and the sound mix.” After the fan asked if that meant the edit was done, Gunn explained: “Yes it’s what’s called latched. Meaning it’s basically latched, but I’ll move cuts around here and there as VFX or music comes in.

What James Gunn’s Superman Comments Mean

It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s A… New Superman Trailer?

Previously, Gunn has hinted that there are more teases for the film to come. Back in April, the director revealed that he hadn’t considered any of the previously released clips a full Superman trailer. He explained: “You haven’t even seen trailer 1.0. yet—only a teaser and a sneak peek!” Gunn then said he couldn’t “wait to show [audiences] the trailer!” Given that the film releases in two months, a new Superman trailer will likely drop soon.

As for Gunn’s comments regarding the status of the film, it is standard for visual effects-heavy movies to be edited late into the production cycle. Superman, being a combination of the sci-fi, action, and superhero genres, still having its effects tweaked makes sense, especially as Gunn stated the film was still being scored.

Our Take On James Gunn’s Superman Comments

A Full Superman Trailer Is Imminent

While Gunn has not indicated a specific date, there are a few that make sense for a new Superman trailer to release. Notably, DC Studios’ parent company has two films hitting theaters between now and the DC release: Final Destination: Bloodlines (May 16, 2025) and F1: The Movie (June 27, 2025).

Warner Bros. could debut the trailer alongside one of their films, as they did with A Minecraft Movie. Regardless, more Superman is likely to come to our screens within the next few weeks—and there’s not a moment too soon.
