A Minecraft Movie Crosses 2 Major Box Office Milestones As It Inches Closer To $1B

A Minecraft Movie continues its march to $1 billion as it has officially crossed two major milestones in one weekend. The movie thrilled audiences in its opening weekend, sparking a strong response online. Audiences celebrated specific scenes by screaming, throwing popcorn, and even bringing a live chicken into the theater. The fanfare has helped the movie draw in large crowds, but speculation continues about when A Minecraft Movie will earn $1 billion at the box office, as it is currently in its sixth weekend.

According to a report by Variety, the adaptation came in third place this weekend, shattering two milestones in the process. It has officially earned $402 million domestically, and it has officially surpᴀssed the $900 million total worldwide. The movie is now just $100 million from crossing the coveted $1 billion threshold, which would be a mᴀssive success for Warner Bros. after a shaky 2024.

What These Milestones Mean For A Minecraft Movie

$1 Billion Remains A Possibility

Despite being in its sixth weekend, the Minecraft adaptation continues to draw hordes of new and returning viewers every week. It is expected to earn around $9 million domestically this weekend, which sets it firmly behind Marvel’s Thunderbolts* and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Considering that both movies have become standout blockbusters, that should come as no great surprise. Still, with just $9 million on the weekend, however, the Minecraft movie could struggle to cross the $1 billion threshold. It will need a strong international hold to break through that total.

A Minecraft Movie is the second-highest-grossing video game movie of all time, after 2023’s $1.36 billion The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Even if it does not cross $1 billion, Warner Bros. should already be looking at greenlighting A Minecraft Movie 2. The first movie is already mᴀssively successful, having had a budget of $150 million, compared to its staggering total so far. Even if it does not cross an arbitrary $1 billion milestone, it should be counted as a complete victory for a studio that struggled with the recent disappointments of The Alto Knights, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and Joker: Folie à Deux. Warner Bros. should consider this a win, regardless of future ticket sales.

Our Take On A Minecraft Movie’s Success

It Remains A Genuine Surprise

While fun and family-friendly movies do tend to find success at the box office, A Minecraft Movie‘s blockbuster theatrical debut remains a surprising feat. Before its release, ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki called the movie “paper-thin“, “on the nose“, and lacking even “a single good joke“. Fortunately for Warner Bros., the young audience and the viral fame helped to propel this movie to abject success. This is a much-needed win for a stumbling studio and proved that Minecraft has the potential to be far more than just a successful video game.
