Night of the Living ᴅᴇᴀᴅ reboot writer shares a major update on the script. In 2022, MGM acquired the rights to a sequel, set to be directed by filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu with a script by LaToya Morgan, who has served as a producer and writer on AMC’s The Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Since the announcement, news has been scarce on the upcoming reboot project.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, LaToya Morgan, who co-created the new Max series, Duster, arriving March 15, offered an update on the long-awaited reboot. Morgan confirmed that she has finished the script, and the project is currently waiting for Amazon MGM’s official approval. Check out her comment below:

Yes, I’m done writing the script and it is with the studio, and we have a wonderful director who’s attached, and we are very close to getting it there, so I can’t say fully, but we’re getting close. We’re getting close, and my work is done. It was a blast work on that. I’m a big fan of George (Romero)’s Night of Living ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.

Morgan also revealed that she initially “said no” to penning the script of the new iteration, knowing the property’s importance in the horror genre. However, a rewatch upon the request of the Romero family “sparked” an idea, which the writer then took to the family and the studio. Read her comment below:

It was huge. I actually said no several times because I revere it so much. It’s like one of the cornerstones of horror. And so I’m a big horror fan. There’s certain тιтles you don’t touch, but his family, they asked me to rewatch the movie and to see if I could come up with anything. And the idea sparked, so I was like, ‘Oh no, I got to do this now.’ So I pitched it to them and they really loved it, and then we took it to the studio and thankfully there were a bunch of different places that were interested. And so now we are at Amazon MGM, and hopefully there’ll be a movie soon.
