The тιтle for the sequel to the blockbuster hit Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire has been officially revealed, and while it’s only a single word, it has mᴀssive implications for the MonsterVerse as a whole. The new тιтle, Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, was revealed alongside teaser footage indicating that the movie is now in production ahead of its 2027 release date. The cast for the Godzilla X Kong sequel has been filling with stars for months now, and while the teaser footage doesn’t reveal any plot or character details, it’s an exciting step forward for the MonsterVerse.
Each MonsterVerse movie’s subтιтle provides a clue about the movie’s content. For example, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire wound up referring to Skar King’s desire to dominate the surface world, and bring about a new Ice Age over which he rules with an iron fist, while Godzilla: King of the Monsters referred to Godzilla reestablishing himself as the planet’s Alpha тιтan after defeating Ghidorah. Something as nebulous as the recently-revealed Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is already spawning plenty of theories about what it could be referring to from a plot perspective.
Supernova Is Not A Reference To Existing Godzilla Or Kong Characters Or Powers
There Is No Monster Named Supernova In Godzilla’s Toho History
The word Supernova on its own is not a reference to anything from Godzilla or Kong’s cinematic past. Neither monster has ever battled another monster named Supernova, nor do Kong or Godzilla have a specific power or plot related to the word Supernova. It’s easy enough to do the mental gymnastics to think that Supernova could be a reference to an even further-evolved version of Godzilla’s atomic powers, like a supped-up iteration of the nuclear pulse he used to kill Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but that seems unlikely given how the franchise has unfolded.
Godzilla x Kong 3’s Supernova тιтle Hints At An Outer Space-Themed Story
The Definition Of The Word Supernova Is The Clue
A supernova, by definition, is the bright and powerful explosion of a star, with different iterations exploding with different magnitudes. They occur towards the end of a star’s life, when it essentially runs out of nuclear fuel and collapses in on itself. Supernovae are typically the causes of black holes, as the collapse of a star on its own gravity yields the super-dense hole after ejecting most of its mᴀss. The use of the word supernova in the movie’s тιтle all but guarantees that there will be an outer space element to the next Godzilla X Kong sequel.
To what degree the movie explores space is still uncertain. It could be an indicator that some of the characters, including Godzilla and Kong, find their way into space, which has happened before in Godzilla’s history. It’s more likely that the movie involves aliens coming to Earth, which has actually happened already in the MonsterVerse; Ghidorah himself was an extraterrestrial organism who sought to shape the Earth to his own desires. The most obvious theory is that the movie will introduce another of the space-originating monsters from Godzilla’s Toho history.
Godzilla x Kong 3’s тιтle Implies SpaceGodzilla Will Be Introduced
The Classic Monster’s Origins Match The тιтle
The most direct connection that the word supernova has to one of Godzilla’s past enemies is to the infamous SpaceGodzilla, an ultra-powered doppelgänger of Earth’s alpha тιтan. In his Toho origin, SpaceGodzilla was born when some of Godzilla’s cells made their way into space either on the back of Mothra or were blasted into space during the death of Biollante; both possibilities are volunteered, but neither is confirmed. The cells made their way into a black hole and re-emerged from a white hole (the theoretical inverse of a black hole), absorbing crystalline organisms that ultimately spawn into the mᴀssive kaiju.
With SpaceGodzilla originating from a black hole, the тιтle Godzilla X Kong: Supernova points a mᴀssive clawed finger in his direction. The MonsterVerse hasn’t introduced a way for Godzilla’s cells to get into space, so it seems all but certain they would need to develop a new origin for SpaceGodzilla’s arrival. It’s also possible that the space-themed тιтle refers to another alien monster from Godzilla’s past, like Gigan, Hedorah, or Orga. However, none of their origins relate so closely to stars and black holes as SpaceGodzilla, making him the obvious choice.
SpaceGodzilla is also powerful enough that the central focus of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova would have to be Godzilla. Kong has been the de facto main character of the last two MonsterVerse movies, and many franchise fans have been both expecting and hoping that the next chapter would pivot back towards Godzilla. If SpaceGodzilla is indeed introduced, Kong is nowhere near a match for him even with his battle axe and B.E.A.S.T. glove, meaning the movie would have to come back to Godzilla as the primary protagonist and shift Kong to the backseat.
Godzilla x Kong 3’s тιтle Could Suggest A Major Death Is Coming
The Definition Of Supernova Has Some Dark Implications
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova could also suggest that a major death is coming to the MonsterVerse. A supernova is usually considered the death of a star, so the new тιтle could even be pointing towards the death of either Godzilla or Kong. It seems particularly possible if SpaceGodzilla is introduced, given that he is widely regarded as one of, if not the most powerful monster that Godzilla has ever faced in his cinematic history. His arsenal of energy-based and telekinetic attacks outmatched Godzilla, who only prevailed with the help of the robotic M.O.G.U.E.R.A. in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.
In fact, the death of either Godzilla or Kong makes a lot of sense in the overarching narrative of the MonsterVerse. Godzilla is ancient and the last of his kind, and it’s been speculated that the MonsterVerse could finally introduce one of his offspring and set up a “new” Godzilla for the future. SpaceGodzilla’s lone Toho appearance actually revolved around him capturing Little Godzilla, a juvenile version of Godzilla who would go on to beome the new Godzilla after the original Heisei Era Big G died from what was essentially a nuclear heart attack.
Kong is less ancient than Godzilla, but given that his origin has been explored, he’s earned the тιтle of King Kong in the Hollow Earth, and he’s been given a son to carry on his legacy, it’s possible that his time in the MonsterVerse is coming to an end. Given the significant connection audiences have to him, Kong’s death at the hands of SpaceGodzilla or another foe could be really impactful, and make Godzilla X Kong: Supernova the most dramatic chapter of the MonsterVerse yet.
