The Accountant 3 Hopes Shared By Star After Sequel’s 92% RT Audience Score

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Accountant 2. The Accountant franchise star Cynthia Addai-Robinson shares what she hopes to see in a potential The Accountant 3. After the success of the first film back in 2016, Ben Affleck reprised his role as Christian Wolff for the sequel, which follows the math savant as he attempts to solve the murder of Ray King (J.K. Simmons) with his brash brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal). While The Accountant 3 has not been officially announced, director Gavin O’Connor has been open about wanting to make a third installment.

During a recent interview with CBR, Addai-Robinson, who plays Treasury agent Marybeth Medina in both movies, addresses the prospect of The Accountant 3. While the actor has mostly been focusing on the sequel, which only just hit theaters in April, she reveals that she would like to see a third installment come to fruition. As for Medina, Addai-Robinson hopes that the next movie continues to push the character forward into new territory, potentially giving her some bigger moments. Check out her comment below:

I haven’t thought about it. I think that I’m still excited to see how people receive the sequel… What I think is lovely is just now getting people’s reaction, especially if they loved the first one, because the second one really is a tonal shift from from the first movie. So at first, you want to hope that you’re satisfying fans’ expectations, and that they don’t necessarily know what they’re going to get of Marybeth Medina, how she’s going to factor into things.

I am hopeful, and I would love to make this the trilogy that it deserves to be. And the Marybeth that we see at the beginning of Accountant 2 is not the same Marybeth by the end — which you hope for any great character arc, that there is some fundamental change in a person. She’s definitely a different woman by the end. I would love to see once she’s had her own “aha” moment, if you will, how that shifts her worldview moving forward. Because at the end of the day, she is ultimately somebody who truly wants to see justice served, put the bad guys away, and that can come about in any number of ways. So perhaps she has a more expansive view of that, and I would be curious myself to see how that translates in a third movie.

What This Means For The Accountant 3

How The Sequel Is Performing In Theaters

The Accountant 2 reviews have been more positive than those for the first film. On Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel enjoys a 77% critics’ score and a glowing 92% audience score, beating the first movie’s scores of 53% and 77%, respectively. At the box office, The Accountant grossed $155 million on a $44 million budget, making it a success. It’s still early days for the sequel, which was made on a higher $80 million budget, but it has been performing well so far and is, as of writing, at $68 million worldwide.

If the sequel continues to perform over the coming weeks in theaters and on VOD following that, it’s entirely possible that O’Connor will get his wish for a third movie. If the green light does come, The Accountant 2‘s ending certainly leaves the door open for more. Christian, Brax, and Medina all make it to the end of the movie alive, meaning the trio could return for another outing. The sequel features some friction between Medina and the two Wolff brothers over the latter’s illegal methods, which is something a third movie could further explore.

Our Take On Addai-Robinson’s The Accountant 3 Hopes

The Sequel Makes A Strong Case For Another Installment

The Accountant 2 makes some big changes, with the film playing out more as a buddy comedy at times as the relationship between Christian and Brax is explored. There’s still plenty of action, but this enhanced focus on character and the bond between the two brothers made this a franchise worthy of further exploration. Medina, too, while more of a supporting figure in The Accountant 2‘s cast, could be interesting to bring back in a third film, given she is at odds somewhat with Christian and Brax’s methods.

$80 million is a hefty price tag for an action thriller, and a third film could have to find a way to be made for less in order to be financially viable.

The major question mark with a potential The Accountant 3 is budget. $80 million is a hefty price tag for an action thriller, and a third film could have to find a way to be made for less in order to be financially viable. This all depends on how much of a success The Accountant 2 is, though, and it’s entirely possible it will enjoy a strong run over the coming weeks if audience interest remains high.
