Sinners begins with Sammie holding onto his broken guitar for dear life as he walks into his father’s church, immediately establishing that it is an important item in the film. While he walks towards his father, who is the town’s preacher, he sees visions of the terrifying night he has lived through. Thankfully, Sammie survives the vampire attack at Club Juke, but most of the other characters in Sinners die. Sinners is undoubtedly a scary horror movie, but it is also a thematically rich story about idenтιтy, family, and community, which is emphasized by objects like Sammie’s guitar.
The movie’s exceptional writing, which emphasizes these themes and many more, has led to many amazing reviews for Sinners. Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki gave the film an impressive score of 9 out of 10, and it also currently has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). While its meaning is not clear at the beginning of the movie, it is understandable why Sammie grips his guitar so hard at the end of Sinners. Therefore, the following is an examination of everything Sammie’s guitar represents in Sinners.
Sammie’s Guitar Represents The Power Of Black Music
Sammie’s Musical Performance In Sinners Is Magical
Years before the events of the film, Sammie receives his guitar from his uncles, Smoke and Stack. They tell him that it once belonged to blues musician Charley Patton. Because of this, Sammie takes great care of the guitar, and treats it as his prized possession. While Sammie is a character who embraces his musical abilities and the history of Black music, his father disagrees with him pursuing a career in music.
In fact, at the beginning of Sinners, Sammie’s father tries to convince Sammie not to go out with Smoke and Stack. His father knows the twin brothers, both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, will create nothing but trouble for Sammie. However, Sammie wants to spend time with his cousins, and feels comfortable around them since they both allow him to express himself through music. This is something he can’t do around his father, which leads to him writing the song “I Lied To You.”
Using his guitar, Sammie channels the power of music, specifically Black music, by performing “I Lied To You” at Club Juke. The musical number at Club Juke in Sinners is mesmerizing, and highlights the true power of music as musicians from different eras perform with Sammie. During Sammie’s performance, an electric guitarist, a DJ, and even members of ancient tribes can be seen. This performance is an important moment in Sammie’s life as a musician, but also leads Remmick and his vampires right to Club Juke.
Sammie’s Guitar In Sinners Is Also A Physical Reminder Of The Night
Sammie Uses His Guitar To Fight Remmick In Sinners
The opening voiceover in Sinners claims that dark forces are drawn to music, which blurs the line between life and death. By including other kinds of musicians, it is clear that Sammie performing “I Lied To You” in Sinners opens doors to both the present and the future. Remmick, a vampire who has lived for 600 years, is immediately drawn to Sammie. In the film, Remmick wants to turn Sammie so that he can use his music to connect with his ancestors. Since vampires are attracted to music in Sinners, practically all the characters end up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.
Sammie’s guitar breaks during his fight with Remmick, but he still can’t let go of it because of how much it means to him.
Sammie is actually one of the only characters who survives the vampire attack. Before the horrors begin, Sammie experiences the greatest night of his life, which is precisely why he can’t let go of the guitar when he returns to his father’s church the next morning. Sammie’s guitar breaks during his fight with Remmick, but he still can’t let go of it because of how much it means to him. For the rest of his life, the guitar is a physical reminder of how important that night was to him.
Sammie’s Guitar Holds Extra Significance Due To Its Owner
Sammie’s Guitar Did Not Actually Belong To Charley Patton
While Sammie initially believed that the guitar was once Charley Patton’s, it is later revealed that it actually belonged to Smoke and Stack’s father. Smoke and Stack only told Sammie it belonged to a famous musician to give it more meaning. However, even after learning it doesn’t belong to Patton, the guitar still holds great significance for Sammie. Since it belonged to his uncle, the guitar represents family and legacy, which are two themes that are explored in Sinners.
Smoke and Stack’s father was not a good parent, and consistently beat his sons. This led to Smoke actually killing his father to protect Stack. By giving their father’s guitar to Sammie, Smoke and Stack can rewrite their own history and add extra meaning to it. Similarly, rather than being a reminder of his uncle, the guitar likely constantly makes Sammie think about Smoke and Stack. Regardless of how things turned out, the opening of Club Juke was still the best night of several characters’ lives, which is what Sammie and Stack discuss in the post-credits scene of Sinners.
How Sammie’s Guitar Becomes A Symbol For Sinners’ Real Meaning
Sinners Is A Thematically Rich Movie
Overall, Sammie’s guitar relates to themes such as idenтιтy, family, and community. These are all things that Ryan Coogler explores in Sinners. Because it was pᴀssed down to Sammie from Smoke and Stack, the guitar is a family heirloom. Even though Smoke dies at the end of Sinners and Sammie survives, the cousins can still be connected through music every time the latter picks up the guitar. Even though Sinners has a bittersweet ending, Sammie being able to feel connected to Smoke and the other Club Juke patrons by playing his guitar is heartwarming.
Clearly, Sammie’s performance at Club Juke was a special moment for everyone in attendance. This performance made them feel like a community. In the film, Remmick wants to use Sammie’s musical abilities to also form a community and connect to different eras of history. Therefore, while he’s not necessarily the main character of the movie, it is clear that Sammie and his guitar are at the forefront of most of the character’s minds. Therefore, it can’t be denied that Sammie’s guitar is the most important and meaningful item in Sinners.
