This Stunning World War II Movie With 94% On Rotten Tomatoes Is The Closest We’re Getting To A Modern Rambo

Fans of the Rambo movies should look to Sisu, an excellent release currently available on Amazon Prime Video or Starz in the U.S. for a glimpse of what a modernized Rambo could be. The Rambo movies are adored by many, led by Sylvester Stallone as Vietnam veteran John Rambo, with Stallone also co-writing every screenplay. Having launched in 1982 with First Blood, the movies attracted a unique fan base with a taste for ridiculous levels of violence and unhinged action fun. This core demographic should head to Amazon Prime Video or Starz to stream Rambo’s successor.

As Stallone and his Rambo franchise competed with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the most muscle-bound movie magic around, they transformed into one of the world’s most-loved movie franchises. The first few movies were hard to argue with. First Blood has a rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and changed the action genre forever. However, the characters of Rambo: Last Blood were different from the first couple of movies, as was the atmosphere of the franchise. Sisu captures some of Rambo’s original spirit, perhaps even more so than Rambo: Last Blood did.

Sisu Is Everything You Could Want From A Modern Rambo Movie

Sisu Is Perfect For Rambo Fans

Sisu is a Finnish movie set in World War II, and it is a great watch for fans of Rambo’s revenge-centered violence. The characters of Sisu are well-rounded and believable, with the central part played to perfection by Jorma Tommila. This gold prospector, Aatami Korpi, takes on the Nazis when they try and take his gold during the Lapland War. This big mistake on the Nazis’ part leads to some of cinema’s most gloriously silly kills in a long time, and creates a strangely cheerful brand of chaos, beautifully filmed near the Nuorgam village in Utsjoki, Lapland.

Sisu Is A Perfect Reminder Of The Rambo Franchise’s Original Tone (Before It Got Silly)

Sisu Can Fill The Void Left By Rambo

Aksel Hennie as SS Senior Storm Leader Bruno Helldorf in Sisu

Sisu feels like an Inglourious Basterds reboot or the next Rambo, and truly delivers on the concept of a rogue Nazi-killing force let loose on unsuspecting soldiers. Nazi killing has become a subgenre in and of itself, and this unique part of Hollywood was heavily influenced by Rambo. In many ways, Sisu calls back the tone of the first few Rambo movies, providing creativity alongside the more standard action gore expected from Nazi-killer war flicks. This rambunctious tone is ᴀssisted by the epic soundtrack, flawless set design, and gorgeous cinematography.

Sisu is not based on a true story, but Tommila’s character is partially based on a historical figure. This comes through in the storytelling, which exploits a simple and linear narrative to pack a real punch. The first few Rambo movies are adored by many for similar reasons as Sisu is loved by critics – they presented some realistic elements of survival tactics. Stallone and Tommila both capture the harrowing trials of one facing nature and enemies alone. The Rambo franchise may have started getting silly, but Sisu avoids this, even through its outlandishness.
