What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

The Video Game Adaptation’s Success Explained

Jack Black as Steve singing in A Minecraft Movie

The critical response to A Minecraft Movie has not been glowing. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a lackluster 48% score from critics, with criticism levied at the movie’s story and lack of emotional depth. In her A Minecraft Movie review for ScreenRant, Mae Abdulbaki awards the movie a score of only four out of 10, taking issue with the humor misfires and shallow characters. She writes:

There wasn’t a single good joke in the entire film, and I usually enjoy Jack Black’s humor. It all felt so forced, an amalgamation of Hollywood’s worst adaptation tendencies. Had there been an emotional throughline and genuine humor, A Minecraft Movie might have worked; at the very least, it might have been fun.

The response from audiences, however, has been much more positive, and this – combined with the mᴀssively popular video game source material – is what has helped A Minecraft Movie hit such remarkable box office highs. The movie has also benefited from the viral Chicken Jockey trend, which has gotten younger audiences out to theaters in droves. Made on an estimated budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie may have been looking at a breakeven point of $375 million, a goal it has clearly far surpᴀssed.

Our Take On A Minecraft Movie’s New Box Office Milestone

A Sequel Confirmation Could Be Imminent

With the digital release date approaching, A Minecraft Movie‘s time crossing major box office milestones is likely coming to an end, but it will probably surpᴀss Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the coming weeks. The movie’s success is a testament to the power of popular source material, a movie star like Black, and just how big of a difference a viral component can make with younger viewers.

Though nothing has been made official just yet, there will surely be A Minecraft Movie 2 after the first film’s performance. What will be interesting will be seeing whether the inevitable sequel can recapture the success of the original. It remains to be seen where A Minecraft Movie will end up when its theatrical run ends, but it has evidently been a major win for Warner Bros.
