A Minecraft Movie Barely Includes The Core Elements Of The Video Game

I’m disappointed that this major aspect of the video game is barely featured in A Minecraft Movie. Even though I didn’t love A Minecraft Movie, I grew up playing the game and appreciate many of the creatures and items that are included in the film. It is a delight exploring the Overworld with A Minecraft Movie’s characters, such as Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn. Early on in the film, these characters meet Steve, who teaches them how things work in the mysterious block-filled dimension known as the Overworld.

Even though its story is quite simple, which has led to some underwhelming reviews for A Minecraft Movie, it’s hard to deny that it’s not fun watching these characters take on Malgosha and her army of zombified piglins. At the end of A Minecraft Movie, the heroes of the film defeat Malgosha and allow creativity to live on in the Overworld. This is great, but the type of creativity that is possible in the Overworld is unfortunately hardly shown in the film. This is because A Minecraft Movie barely shows any building or crafting.

A Minecraft Movie Surprisingly Doesn’t Show Much Building Or Crafting

A Minecraft Movie’s Characters Could Have Built Anything They Wanted

The main appeal of the Minecraft video game is that players can build practically anything they can imagine. While some players may prefer other aspects of the game, such as mining, exploring, or fighting enemies, building unique structures is arguably the most important aspect of Minecraft. This is why it’s surprising that the characters actually aren’t shown doing much building in A Minecraft Movie.

This is not to say that this element of the game is completely ignored in the movie. After all, A Minecraft Movie opens with a montage of Steve building in the Overworld, and Henry also builds a tower-like structure to help protect the characters from several dangerous mobs at night. However, other than these two instances, the characters in A Minecraft Movie are never shown building anything. Natalie and Dawn build a house towards the end of the film, but this unfortunately happens off-screen.

A Minecraft Movie Had The Perfect Story To Explore Building & Crafting More

Steve Could Have Taught The Other Characters More In A Minecraft Movie

I understand that constantly watching characters build may have been too boring for A Minecraft Movie, but the film has the perfect story to include more of this key aspect of the game. When Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn enter the Overworld, they quickly meet Steve, who has spent years in the block-filled dimension and seemingly understands how practically everything works. While Steve did teach the other characters some things in A Minecraft Movie, the film could have went much deeper into this.

Throughout the film, Steve shows the other characters around some areas of the Overworld and explains to them how things work, but never takes the time to actually teach them to build. Since the story of A Minecraft Movie is so rushed, the characters never slow down and actually try to improve their skills, like a player of the game would do. Obviously, the plot of the film needs to be constantly moving forward, but it would have been nice if more building and crafting scenes were included so that the characters would better represent the Minecraft video game experience.

More Building & Crafting Could’ve Improved A Minecraft Movie

A Minecraft Movie Needed More Building Scenes

Keeping creativity alive is such a major aspect of A Minecraft Movie’s story. Malgosha wants to end all creativity, but the film’s main characters see the value in it. This is precisely why it’s disappointing that it’s not better emphasized how creative these characters actually are. By including more creative sequences which featured the characters building, A Minecraft Movie could have been much better. However, unfortunately, this major aspect of the game is barely touched on in A Minecraft Movie.
