I’ve Completely Changed My Mind About Lewis Pullman’s Sentry Suit After Watching Thunderbolts*

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Thunderbolts*.I was not a fan of Lewis Pullman’s Sentry suit when I first saw it, but having watched Thunderbolts*, I completely changed my mind about the hero’s costume. The Marvel Cinematic Universe just got one of its most powerful heroes ever in the form of Bob Reynolds, aka Sentry. I’m interested in how the franchise plans to use him in Avengers: Doomsday and future projects, as Thunderbolts*‘s post-credits scene revealed Bob is not active as Sentry, as he is afraid the Void will take over.

Thunderbolts* did a great job of making Sentry’s MCU debut as impactful as it should be. Marvel gave the character a modernized version of his suit from the comics, pretty much the same powers he is known for, and had a phenomenal sequence where he easily defeated all of the Thunderbolts. Initially, I had some doubts about Sentry’s MCU suit, but I’m now a fan of it and think it could be even better in a possible Thunderbolts* sequel.

Sentry’s Suit Was Leaked By Merch Before Thunderbolts* Was Released

The Hero’s Costume Was Revealed Despite Marvel’s Attempts To Keep It Hidden

As has become the norm with Marvel Studios releases, toys and other merchandise often reveal costumes and characters before an MCU movie is released. While Marvel tried its best to keep Sentry’s suit a secret, only showing Pullman’s Bob in civilian clothes in Thunderbolts*‘s trailers and hinting at Sentry’s MCU debut through his belt, boots, and such types of sH๏τs, we got to see what he looked like before the movie was released.

Sentry’s Thunderbolts* costume was revealed during Hasbro Pulse’s 2025 Marvel Legends Fan Stream. Toys in the Marvel Legends collection for the MCU movie revealed closer looks at multiple characters from the team, and it was there that I got to see Lewis Pullman’s Sentry suit for the first time. Sure, it did not have the same kind of impact, lighting, and such that comes from a live-action costume in a movie, but all the suit’s details were revealed.

I Was Not A Fan Of Sentry’s MCU Suit At First

There Was One Key Problem With The Marvel Hero’s Costume

Interestingly, Thunderbolts*‘s Sentry suit had a similar effect on me as that of another major superhero coming to the big screen in 2025. That other hero is not from Marvel, but DC, as I was also not a fan of David Corenswet’s Superman costume when director James Gunn shared the first look at it. Like Superman’s DCU suit, I felt Sentry’s MCU costume was simply overdesigned in an attempt to modernize a perfectly cool classic design.

Both the Superman and Sentry movie suits feature too many lines for my taste, and that is something the MCU does for quite a few of its superhero costumes. To me, Sentry’s suit should be as simple as possible, purposefully made to look like a Golden Age hero that others look up to. Then, when he turns into the Void, like what happens in Thunderbolts*, we can have that classic notion of what a superhero is completely twisted to a darker side. I felt Sentry’s MCU suit should have looked cleaner.

After Watching Thunderbolts*, Sentry’s Suit Is Perfect

The Movie Explains Why Sentry Looks The Way He Does And It Works

Now that I watched Thunderbolts*, I have to say that my opinion on Sentry’s MCU suit has changed completely for a few reasons. The first is that the suit simply looks amazing in motion. Thunderbolts* did a lot of its action practically, and even though it is clear that a Superman-like character needs CGI to work due to his powers, I felt Sentry looked real during his time in the suit. What I mean by that is that there was no distracting layer of CGI on top of the suit, as happens with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

The other reason why I think Lewis Pullman’s Sentry suit is perfect now has to do with the reason why it looks the way it does. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine had huge plans for Project Sentry, as she wanted to create the perfect superhero that would be adored by the mᴀsses and would give her unlimited power. To that end, Sentry’s suit, hair, logo, and more were all developed based on numerous studies and focus group tests. It makes sense that Sentry’s MCU suit then has a corporate look, so I now think Thunderbolts* perfectly handled it.
