Sebastian Stan & Wyatt Russell Reveal Cut Moment From The Thunderbolts* Post-Credits Scene

WARNING: This article includes SPOILERS from Thunderbolts*.According to Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell, the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene had a cut moment that fans didn’t get to see. While Phase 5 may have come to an end with Marvel Studios’ latest release, the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene left something for fans to look forward to with not just Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, but also The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer. However, it appears that there was meant to be a little bit more from certain Thunderbolts* characters in the post-credits scene where the team appear to witness the arrival of the Fantastic Four.

In a new interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Stan and Russell were asked about the huge Fantastic Four moment in the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene and what their reactions were like to seeing that conclusion. While Stan comments he has yet to see the film, the two MCU stars revealed that Bucky Barnes and John Walker actually had a moment in the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene that got removed from the theatrical version, as they shared the following:

Sebastian Stan: Since I haven’t seen it yet, did our thing make it?! (To Wyatt Russell) The four?

Wyatt Russell: Honestly? No…it didn’t.

Sebastian Stan: We had a very funny thing, I [as Bucky] was looking at it as it comes in and go, “What’s the number for?”

Wyatt Russell: [Laughs] And I kinda had to be like, “What’s the number four?” And it turned into a Leslie Nielsen sketch.

Sebastian Stan: I’m sad it wasn’t there.

Wyatt Russell: I’m very happy it wasn’t there, [because] it would have made everybody want to murder my character immediately.

What Sebastian Stan & Wyatt Russell’s MCU Story Means For Thunderbolts*

As funny as it would have been to see Bucky and John having that banter in the Thunderbolts* movie ending, it may actually be good that it didn’t get put in the final version of the film. At that point in Thunderbolts*, these characters had become the public new faces for the New Avengers, which is meant to be at least somewhat serious, while also serving as a twist, given that Valentina had turned the narrative in order to save herself. The Thunderbolts* post-credits scene already contained a number of comedic beats, meaning further jokes could have undermined things.

Having any of the Thunderbolts* characters give any funny remarks while seeing the Fantastic Four’s ship in space could also have undermined the tease of Marvel’s First Family, especially as they are about to enter the MCU this summer. As their ship became one of the biggest Marvel Easter eggs and references for Thunderbolts*, a quippy comment in that moment could also have felt very forced. Given that the MCU has sometimes been criticized for relying too much on humor, it was wise that Stan and Russell’s little beat didn’t get used in the end.

Our Take On Sebastian Stan & Wyatt Russell’s Thunderbolts* Story

The Fantastic four looks up at Shalla Bal in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The news that Stan and Russell had a moment of their own in the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene makes it seem possible that a blooper reel or deleted scenes collection will feature this moment when the film gets released through home media. While a Thunderbolts* 2 movie doesn’t seem to be happening, the New Avengers will be back in Avengers: Doomsday, which appears to be where they will finally get to meet the characters who were onboard the Fantastic Four ship. But until then, the world can relive Thunderbolts* in theaters as they get ready to see them in Phase 6.
