Warning! This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*
Thunderbolts*
saw almost all of New York consumed by a void, which likely caught heroes like Daredevil and Spider-Man in its path. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
is a huge expanse that extends across a multiverse of stories and countless characters, but there is a lot of overlap between the heroes, especially when they share territory that they protect, like New York City. As a result, NYC has become a H๏τ spot for superhero activity, and, unfortunately, that also makes it a target of several supernatural attacks by villains, aliens, and monsters alike.
And in Thunderbolts*, New York saw its latest terrifying tragedy when nearly the entire city was consumed in a terrifying black void emitted by the dark side of Bob Reynolds, aka Sentry. This void was able to immediately turn people into shadows on the ground, before it continued on its devastating path of destruction, covering entire skyscrapers, and extending beyond the water surrounding the island. And while Thunderbolts* revealed what happened to the anti-heroes who starred in the film when they were absorbed by the void, there are more heroes in New York that likely got caught in the radius.
The Void Was Big Enough To Reach More New York Heroes Like Spider-Man & Daredevil
All The New York Superheroes Got Absorbed In The Void
Since Thunderbolts* shows the void extending to great lengths, turning much of New York into a black hole of nothing but shapes, it’s easy to imagine that this caught other familiar figures in the MCU. Not everyone lives in New York, with heroes like Scott Lang residing on the West Coast, and heroes like Sam Wilson often going on missions abroad, but there are heroes who choose to serve their local community, with a focus on helping out their neighborhood. This includes Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, who is consumed by his mission to protect and serve Hell’s Kitchen.
And in addition, Spider-Man, who is often given the nickname, the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, is often seen swinging through the streets of New York. His radius is usually a little larger than Daredevil’s but presumably, he would be somewhere inside the bounds of New York City when the void began to spread. Now, while Spidey could potentially swing out of harms way, the void moved quickly, appearing to speed up the further it got, which suggests that both Daredevil and Spider-Man likely got caught in the void.
What Would Spider-Man & Daredevil Have Seen In The Void?
The Darkest Parts Of Their Stories Brought To Light
Despite both Daredevil and Spider-Man being incredibly competent heroes with plenty of experience going up against impossible odds, since they were not involved in the lead-up to the void appearing outside the old Avengers tower, they would likely be stunned and overwhelmed by the sudden appearance of the void. And while they almost certainly tried to find a way out, or answers about what was causing this phenomenon, since they did not know Bob, it’s unlikely they would have been able to track him down in the same way the other members of the New Avengers team were able to.
As a result, both probably found themselves stuck inside a nightmarish reality reliving some of their worst memories. For Matt, this could have been seeing Foggy being killed by Bullseye over and over, or a mission with Frank where he couldn’t stop him from killing people, or when Daredevil was on the verge of killing people like Benjamin Poindexter. Beyond that, Matt also has a tragic past that includes him becoming blind in an accident, his father being killed by mobsters, and being trained and then abandoned by Stick as a boy.
For Peter Parker, his life has recently been transformed by everyone forgetting who he is. Therefore, his traumatic void experience could be him seeing his former girlfriend, MJ, have no idea who he is. It could also be him holding his Aunt May in his arms as she dies, or perhaps a moment that plays out before his story starts in the movies. Depending on what happened around Uncle Ben’s death, that could be what haunts Peter. In addition, he had moments with his mentor, Tony Stark, that may stand out, such as Tony’s death, Peter’s disappearance in the blip, or Tony’s frustration when Peter was not being responsible with his powers.
Spider-Man & Daredevil Experiencing The Void Could Be Addressed In Upcoming Phase 6 Projects
The Void Taking Over New York Has Far Reaching Effects
Considering the vast reach of the void in Thunderbolts*, it feels like this incident will have far-reaching consequences, like the Battle of New York, or the destruction of Sokovia, with the event being referenced in other Marvel projects. With this in mind, it also feels appropriate that both Daredevil: Born Again season 2 should make some reference to it, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This could impact the overall story, or simply highlight how the experience impacted the individual heroes and the people around them. But if it neglects to highlight the events at all, it harms the connected nature of the stories.
Considering the vast reach of the void in Thunderbolts*, it feels like this incident will have far-reaching consequences, like the Battle of New York, or the destruction of Sokovia.
In Born Again season 1’s finale, it becomes clear that Wilson Fisk, the mayor of New York, is on the warpath to get rid of vigilante heroes with his Anti-Vigilant Task Force. As the mayor of the city, he is sure to use this occurrence as further evidence of why vigilantes are endangering the city. This could be further intensified due to Fisk experiencing his own personal hell, such as being separated from Vanessa, or killing his father. The events could also draw Matt’s attention to some of the other heroes in New York, who could have been brought out of hiding after the introduction of the New Avengers.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it is likely to be a very different story, unless his story connects with Daredevil and Wilson Fisk’s somehow, which could result in the heroes becoming allies. However, the film is also releasing very soon after Avengers: Doomsday, which means it may need to tie in more closely with that film and Avengers: Secret Wars. The incident would also likely cause Peter to worry about friends like Ned Leeds and MJ, despite them not remembering him. As a result, he may check in on them once again, or be forced to confront darker parts of his past that haven’t been explored in great detail, thanks to the events of Thunderbolts*.
