Warning: This article contains minor SPOILERS for Thunderbolts*.Fans are still wondering how the MCU can spin Doctor Doom as the main Multiverse Saga villain, and one Avengers: Doomsday theory actually seems like the most likely answer. Kang the Conqueror was being primed to be the Thanos-equivalent villain of the Multiverse Saga. With his variants spread out across timelines, He Who Remains first appeared at the end of Loki season 1 while Victor Timely was featured in season 2. Kang the Conqueror was the main villain of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania while the Council of Kangs were teased in the mid-credits scene.
Kang’s heavy feature in the MCU came to an abrupt end when actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harᴀssment and ᴀssault. Marvel cut ties with the actor and immediately started pivoting the Multiverse Saga in a new direction, leading to the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU. He will be playing Victor Von Doom but with Doomsday set to premiere next year, the MCU doesn’t have a lot of time left to set him up as a major villain. However, the transition from Kang to Doom may be more seamless than expected.
Kang Seems To Be ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Now Following Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania
He Dies In A Final Battle Against Ant-Man
Kang was being set up to be the major Multiverse Saga villain, but he surprisingly died after just one MCU appearance. The main villain of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was trying to do anything to get out of the Quantum Realm, which is why he wanted the Pym Particles from Scott Lang and his family. Though he makes progress in his plan, Kang has to face the Freedom Fighters’ revolution, and in a final brutal battle against Ant-Man, he is shrunken and killed by his own Multiversal Engine Core.
When Quantumania first premiered, many still believed that Kang might return despite his apparent death. It just didn’t seem like the MCU would introduce and kill off the тιтular Avengers 5 villain within one project, especially one in the main timeline. However, Majors’ situation and the subsequent pivot have likely cemented Kang’s fate for good and his Quantumania death will remain final. The MCU somehow managed to set up a perfect situation where they don’t have to address Kang himself anymore, and if necessary, the Council of Kangs could be ignored as it was just a mid-credits scene.
Kang’s Death In The MCU Could Be Exactly What Brings Doctor Doom Into Conflict With The Franchise’s Main Heroes
The Death Of A Powerful Individual May Catch Doom’s Attention
The main MCU universe killing their version of Kang would make the timeline seem much more powerful than before. Kang was regarded to be a major threat to every timeline and with the main MCU timeline being able to take him out, it definitely puts Earth-616 at a far higher threat level than before. If Earth-616 is capable of taking out Kang the Conqueror on its own, then other beings in the universe may be on high alert.
Some powerful individuals can sense even the slightest shift of power in the universe, which could be how the studio explains Doctor Doom coming into the MCU. With word getting out that Kang the Conqueror is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, a version of Doctor Doom from an alternate universe could take notice and come to Earth-616 to investigate. Kang’s death acting as a signal of sorts for Doctor Doom would be a pretty seamless excuse for the MCU to use in regard to switching villains, interlacing their stories in a way that doesn’t make the Multiverse Saga feel disjointed.
The Fantastic Four’s MCU Introduction Would Add Further Reason For Doctor Doom To Face Marvel’s Main Heroes
The Fantastic Four Are Doom’s Notorious Adversaries
The death of Kang may already be a good enough reason for Doctor Doom to make his way into the main MCU timeline, but Thunderbolts* has just introduced one more. In the film’s post-credits scene, the New Avengers acknowledge a problem in outer space and get a distress signal from an incoming spacecraft. The ship is revealed to be the Fantastic Four’s, perfectly setting up the MCU’s next theatrical release.
As the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom are notorious adversaries in the comics, the family’s arrival on Earth-616 will be yet another call to the supervillain. Not only has Earth-616 now defeated a powerful individual in Kang the Conqueror, but they have just acquired their own version of the Fantastic Four that Doom is so keen on fighting. Earth-616 is a threat in Doom’s eyes, and these two reasons alone could be why he makes his way to the main MCU timeline for Avengers: Doomsday.
