Avengers Tower New Owner, Name & Purpose Going Into MCU Phase 6 Explained

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s Thunderbolts*Eight years after Tony Stark sold Avengers Tower in Spider-Man: Homecoming, we finally know who bought the iconic MCU building and its fate, thanks to Marvel’s Thunderbolts*. As seen in the new ensemble movie, multiple established characters (and a couple of newcomers) come together to form the brand-new team, calling themselves the Thunderbolts*. However, the truth about the former Avengers Tower is also revealed along the way, solving a major mystery fans have been wondering about for nearly a decade.

In Thunderbolts*, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Ghost, and John Walker are all inadvertently brought together thanks to the actions of CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who’s also revealed to be the head of the mysterious O.X.E Group. Having spent years trying to create their very own superhuman, Val and OXE end up with a surprise success in the form of Bob Reynolds aka Sentry. Throughout the group’s evolution into a brand-new MCU, the former Avengers Tower serves as a key location, albeit renamed and redesigned. Here’s Avengers Tower’s new owner, name, and purpose going into the MCU’s Phase 6 explained.

Avengers Tower New Owner And Name Explained

Valentina and The Watchtower

Thunderbolts* confirms that it was indeed Valentina and O.X.E. Group who purchased Avengers Tower from Tony Stark following the construction of the Avengers Compound in upstate New York. Renaming the iconic MCU building as The Watchtower, the original intention was that the tower would serve as a new base of operations for Sentry, OXE’s custom-built superhero, who would operate under Val’s direct orders. While renovations were ongoing to give the building a sleek, all-black makeover, the Sentry Project was abandoned and scrapped following what seemed like nothing but failures, and Val being at risk of impeachment…but then there was Bob.

One of Project Sentry’s last test subjects, it was revealed that the procedure worked on Bob Reynolds, granting him impressive powers and motivating Val to move O.X.E. Group’s operations back to the Watchtower. In the original comics, Sentry also had a Watchtower, notably located directly above Stark Tower. However, it went virtually unseen for years until the world was made to remember that Sentry and his HQ existed (Bob had once used his powers to make the world forget about him to contain The Void). As such, it’s no coincidence that Avengers Tower has become The Watchtower in the MCU.

Watchtower Is Now The Base For The New Avengers

Furthermore, Thunderbolts* post-credits scene confirms the Watchtower is now going to be the ongoing base of operations for “The New Avengers” as the Thunderbolts were publicly dubbed by Val by the movie’s end (explaining the movie тιтle’s asterisk). Judging by what’s seen in the post-credits, it certainly looks as though Val and O.X.E. finished the renovations and are now funding this new team. Featuring a brand-new “A” logo, advanced technology and AI not unlike JARVIS or FRIDAY, and even a couple of jets, it looks as though a brand-new era has come for the old Avengers Tower.

It’s pretty cool to see how the MCU’s Sentry and Watchtower are debuting alongside the New Avengers, mirroring how they were similarly brought back with the debut of the comics’ New Avengers in 2005. The Avengers Tower building has now become a full-functioning superhero base once more, remarkably just ahead of the MCU’s Phase 6 with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. One can imagine that this new base and home for the New Avengers will be seen again, and could even serve as a key meeting ground for all the teams already confirmed to appear in 2026’s Doomsday.

The Significance Of The New Avengers Being In Avengers Tower

The New Avengers Are Already Clashing With Captain America

Based on Thunderbolts’ ending with the New Avengers’ debut to the press, the various magazine covers during the credits, and even the Wheaties boxes, it’s obvious they’re going to be a very public-facing brand. Considering the reveal that they’re already clashing with Sam Wilson’s Captain America and his Avengers (who humorously have the “Avengers” name copyrighted), it does help the New Avengers’ cause that they’re based in Avengers Tower, regardless of whether the Watchtower name sticks or not. At any rate, bringing the iconic building back after nearly a decade of mystery is very exciting for the MCU’s future.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters from Marvel Studios.
