Alec Baldwin’s Controversial Western Movie Debuts With Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score

Alec Baldwin is best known for his leading and supporting roles in a variety of genres, from comedy to drama, in both film and television. He’s received a whopping 20 Emmy nominations for his work on the sitcoms Will & Grace, winning three for playing network executive Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, and Donald Trump on the sketch comedy series, Saturday Night Live. Baldwin also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing a casino manager in the 2003 film, The Cooler.

Baldwin’s film career began in 1988 with a series of roles in Beetlejuice, Working Girl, and Married to the Mob before playing Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October (1990). Baldwin has made brief, but memorable appearances in movies like Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Along Came Polly (2004), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Blue Jasmine (2013), and the Mission: Impossible movies Rogue Nation (2015) and Fallout (2018). Now, Baldwin’s controversial Western movie has finally been released.

Rust Debuts With Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score

It’s Now Playing In Theaters

Rust has debuted with a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. The movie is best known for the tragedy that occurred on set in 2021 when a prop gun handled by Alec Baldwin accidentally fired a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, which sparked an extensive investigation and multiple legal battles. Written and directed by Joel Souza, the Western stars Baldwin as an aging outlaw who comes out of retirement to rescue his grandson (Patrick Scott McDermott), who has been sentenced to hanging for an accidental killing, and the pair are pursued by a relentless bounty hunter (Travis Fimmel).

Now, on the day that it releases in theaters, Rust has debuted with a middling 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has 20 reviews at the time of writing, so the score could fluctuate as more are published. It doesn’t have any user ratings yet to qualify for an audience score, though it should soon, with it now showing in theaters.

What Rust’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

What Are The Reviews Saying?

Rust‘s Rotten Tomatoes scores mean that reviews are mixed, with many critics praising its visual beauty and craftsmanship, courtesy of the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, while criticizing its clichéd storytelling, slow pacing, and lack of emotional impact. Some appreciate its reverence for the Western genre, but, as expected, others feel it is overshadowed by the tragic incident that occurred during production. As Baldwin’s long and varied career intersects with a film forever marked by loss, Rust stands as a haunting reminder that some stories leave their deepest impression off-screen.
