Alex Garland’s War Movie Climbs A24’s Top 15 Highest-Grossing Charts At The Domestic Box Office In Just Three Weeks

Alex Garland has been a notable writer and later director for over two decades. He published the 1996 novel, The Beach, which was adapted into a 2000 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Garland then transitioned into screenwriting, penning the script for 28 Days Later in 2002. It was not until 2014 that he made his directorial debut, pairing with A24 to helm the AI thriller Ex Machina. This earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and the film won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

This kick-started what would become a healthy working relationship between Garland and A24. While he would depart from the distributor for his second feature, the book adaptation Annihilation, they later reunited for 2022’s Men. Last year, he directed the well-reviewed Civil War, becoming the highest-grossing A24 movie of all time at the worldwide box office and the second-highest grossing domestically. Now, Garland’s latest A24 film is making significant box office strides.

Warfare Is Climbing Up A24’s Highest-Grossing Charts

It’s In The Top 15 Domestically

Warfare has now entered a key box office chart for A24. Co-directed by Garland and real-life war veteran Ray Mendoza, the war epic is about a group of Navy SEALs on a dangerous mission through Ramadi, Iraq. The movie features Joseph Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Aaron Mackenzie, Alex Brockdorff, and Finn Bennett. Warfare received positive reviews, getting a 92% Tomatometer. ScreenRant‘s Mary Kᴀssel gave the movie 7 out of 10 stars, writing “Warfare doesn’t struggle to keep you on the edge of your seat.”

Per The Numbers, Warfare has now soared on A24’s all-time charts. The film is now in the top 15 highest-grossing A24 movies of all time at the domestic box office, taking the no. 15 slot with a $21.8 million domestic gross at the time of writing. The movie also crossed the $25 million threshold globally, boasting $26.2 million. Now, it is eyeing to surpᴀss We Live in Time, which made $24.6 million domestically.

What This Means For Alex Garland

Three Of His Films Are In A24’s Top 15

With Warfare entering A24’s top 15 domestically, Garland now claims three spots on this record list. Joining Civil War and Warfare is his debut feature, Ex Machina, which made $25.4 million domestically (and $38.2 million worldwide). Even as Garland transitions back to writing for his upcoming projects, which include 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the status of his directorial films on charts like this is good fuel for his career.
