New Video Game Horror Adaptation With 52% RT Score Hits A Major Global Milestone In Just One Week

A new video game horror adaptation has hit a major box office milestone in one week. Many video game horror franchises have been adapted into live-action movies and have found box office success despite negative critical reviews. Inspired by a 1989 Capcom game, Resident Evil is often credited as one of the first successful video game adaptations, with the entire Resident Evil film series having grossed over 1.2 billion worldwide.

In 2023, Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on the survival game of the same name and starring The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson, along with Elizabeth Lail and Matthew Lillard in the lead roles, became the highest-grossing horror film that year and Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film of all time. The success also resulted in a sequel, the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, scheduled to hit the theaters on December 5.

Until Dawn Crosses A Major Global Box Office Within One Week

The Movie Has Made $20 Million Against A $15 Million Production Budget

The new video game horror adaptation, Until Dawn, has crossed a major worldwide box office milestone. Based on Supermᴀssive Games’ 2015 interactive horror movie video game of the same name, where players’ choices affect the story’s outcome, the new horror movie, released on April 25, follows a group of friends who are forced to be hunted by a masked killer every night. Until Dawn‘s cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Peter Stormare.

According to The Numbers, Until Dawn has crossed the $20 million global box office milestone within a week of its release, with $10 million each from domestic and international revenues. The movie currently ranks 47th in the all-time domestic box office for movies based on games and is the 32nd highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, first released in 2025.

The movie opened at $8 million at the weekend box office, ranking No. 5 behind A Minecraft Movie, The Accountant 2, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and Sinners. Despite having a seemingly underwhelming box office performance, Until Dawn has already exceeded its $15 production budget. Its box office growth has also been steady since its release.

It doesn’t seem to be long before the new horror movie starts turning a profit, regardless of mixed reviews from critics. The movie currently has a 53% Rotten Tomatoes score among critics and a 68% approval rate among viewers. ScreenRant’s review for Until Dawn points out the movie’s potential to become “one of the classics in the genre.” The new video game adaptation sounds like an enjoyable time-loop horror film.
