Gal Gadot To Star In Post-WWII Thriller From Mulan Director

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is set to team up with Mulan director Niki Caro on the new post-World War II thriller, Ruin. Caro, a New Zealand filmmaker whose previous movies also include her 2002 breakout film Whale Rider and the 2017 adaptation of The Zookeeper’s Wife, most recently helmed Netlfix’s action thriller The Mother with Jennifer Lopez. Meanwhile, Gadot, perhaps best known for her tenure as the former DC Extended Universe’s Wonder Woman, also entered the world of live-action Disney remakes as the Evil Queen in Snow White.

Per Variety, Gadot has been tapped to star alongside Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) in Ruin, with Caro ᴀssuming directorial duties. Based on a script by Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo, Gadot is set to play a recently released prison camp detainee in post-World War II Germany. Gadot is also set to produce the film with her husband Jaron Varsano, Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures, and Caro.

What We Know About Gal Gadot’s Ruin

Gadot Has Been Circling The Project For Years

Penned by the same screenwriters behind Marvel’s Eternals, the script for Ruin first created significant buzz when it topped Hollywood’s coveted Black List survey back in 2017. Following the story of Gadot’s recently released camp prisoner, the movie will see her character make an unlikely alliance with a former German soldier (played by Schoenaerts) as she seeks revenge on a Nazi SS squad in post-war Germany. Previously, Gadot had been in negotiations to lead an earlier iteration of the project, which was originally set to be helmed by Justin Kurzel (The Order).

The movie marks the second time Caro has helmed a World War II drama, with The Zookeeper’s Wife recounting the true story of Polish zookeepers Jan and Antonina Żabiński and how they rescued hundreds of Polish Jews throughout the country’s Nazi occupation. Meanwhile, Gadot has also previously been attached to both produce and star in a recounting of the story of the Polish resistance figure Irena Sendler for Warner Bros.

Our Take On Gadot’s New WWII Thriller

Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) runs through No Man's Land in Wonder Woman

While both Gadot and Caro have had varying levels of experience with handling World War II-era tales, the revenge thriller premise of Ruin would seemingly lend itself to a very different kind of project than either The Zookeeper’s Wife or Gadot’s Irena Sendler project. Instead, previous reports have likened the script to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and David Ayer’s Fury.

Armed with a gritty, revenge-fuelled premise, Ruin looks set to be an interesting undertaking for both the film’s star and director. Whether it will manage to attain the same levels of success as the films to which it has been compared remains to be seen, though the streaming success of Caro’s previous action thriller places her in good stead to helm this latest project.
