A Minecraft Movie’s Domestic Box Office Pᴀsses Final Harry Potter Film In Studio’s Top 5 Highest-Grossing Movie Charts

A Minecraft Movie

crosses a new box office milestone, beating the final Harry Potter movie. Directed by Jared Hess, the Warner Bros. film serves as an adaptation of the hit Mojang Studios video game. Jack Black leads A Minecraft Movie‘s cast as Steve, an expert crafter who leads a team of misfits on an epic quest to save the cubic Overworld from a dangerous villain. The film hit theaters on April 4 and opened to a stunning $313 million worldwide at the box office, and it’s still going strong almost a month later.

New data from The Numbers now reveals that A Minecraft Movie has now grossed $817 million worldwide, comprising $382.5 million from North America and $435 million internationally. The $382.5 million figure makes the movie the fifth highest-grossing Warner Bros. тιтle domestically of all time. It takes over the spot from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, which grossed $382 million domestically. Check out the Warner Bros. domestic box office chart below:

What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

Will It Beat Wonder Woman?

Though A Minecraft Movie reviews were mixed from critics, this hasn’t hurt the movie with audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ score is a lackluster 47%, but the audience-driven Popcornmeter score is much stronger at 86%. This audience response is what is driving the film’s success, and that includes viral elements like the A Minecraft Movie‘s chicken jockey scene, which has become a phenomenon on social media, especially with younger viewers.

In today’s movie landscape, theatrical exclusivity windows are getting shorter, with some movies playing only for two or three weeks before going to VOD. A Minecraft Movie has been in theaters for almost a month now and it’s still going strong, with relatively low weekend-to-weekend drops. Judging from the progress it’s made thus far, the video game adaptation could continue to climb the ranks on the Warner Bros. chart above to surpᴀss Wonder Woman (2017), though it may struggle to crack the top three.

Our Take On A Minecraft Movie’s New Milestone

A Sequel Will Struggle To Recapture The Viral Essence Of The First Movie

While A Minecraft Movie probably won’t be unseating the top-grossing Warner Bros. films, it’s still been a major win for the studio, especially given its $150 million budget. The film is a testament to what can be achieved when a movie appeals to younger movie-goers and how important a viral marketing component can be. Unfortunately, the latter is very hard to manufacture organically, and it’s generally something that happens by accident. Look no further than the GentleMinions phenomenon with Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022.

If it leans too hard into recapturing the viral essence of the first movie, this could actually work against it.

What will be interesting will be whether the inevitable A Minecraft Movie 2 will be able to match its predecessor’s success. If it leans too hard into recapturing the viral essence of the first movie, this could actually work against it. A sequel, however, is still several years away, and, for now, it’s clear that A Minecraft Movie is still striking a big chord with viewers.
