The opening credits sequence of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was incredible, but it’s a shame Marvel Studios didn’t choose to copy one brilliant trick from 20th Century Fox’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movies for Ryan Reynolds’ MCU debut. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was game-changing for the MCU as the franchise’s first R-rated movie and as the perfect project to bridge the gap between the MCU and Fox’s X-Men franchise. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine quickly became one of the MCU’s most entertaining installments, and the movie’s inspired opening credits sequence set the tone immediately.
Having crossed the $1.3 billion mark at the global box office, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine is the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, which sets a huge standard for the MCU going forward. This immense success makes it inevitable that Ryan Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool will return to the MCU, even though this hasn’t yet been confirmed. If and when he does, it would be great to see some of the best tricks from 2016’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and 2018’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 copied in the MCU proper, especially after 2024’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine omitted one of these tricks from its own opening sequence.
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s Opening Credit Sequence Was Incredible
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool Danced To NSYNC In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s Opening Sequence
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine established its comedic and entertaining tone immediately by having Wade Wilson did up Logan’s grave and use Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton to take on a platoon of Time Variance Authority Minute-Men. This violence and brutality was interspersed with some incredible moments of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool dancing to the tune of NSYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye” from 2000. Professional dancer Nick Pauley sported the ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool suit for this sequence, copying NSYNC’s exact dance for the song, which made this whole sequence even funnier.
This sequence of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool taking on TVA Minute-Men while dancing to the tune of “Bye, Bye, Bye” formed the opening credits of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, ending with Wade Wilson unsheathing Wolverine’s adamantium claws as if they were his own. An opening credits sequence is a rarity in the MCU, but it’s great to see Marvel Studios repeating this technique that worked so well in Ryan Reynolds’ two previous ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movies, both of which also featured an opening credits sequence. However, Marvel Studios omitted one huge part of these Fox intros, which was a shame to lose.
I Wish ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2’s Best Opening Credits Trick Had Been Repeated In The MCU
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 Did Something ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Did Not
While the credits played over ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s fight against the TVA and his dancing to NSYNC, these credits were bog-standard, very unlikely the opening credits sequences from ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2. In Ryan Reynolds’ debut as the Merc-with-a-Mouth, the opening credits included witty and satirical names, such as “Some Douchebag’s Film,” “Starring God’s Perfect Idiot” and “Written by the Real Heroes Here,” all set to the tune of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning.” ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 took this in a different direction, as the opening reacted to Vanessa’s demise in the style of a James Bond credits sequence.
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine removed this hilarious trick, keeping the credits very straightforward rather than packing more of a comedic punch. While the opening credits for ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine that Marvel Studios decided to go with were still hilarious and effective, it would have been even funnier if ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine had just that touch more self-awareness to poke fun at the actual creatives behind the movie’s development. While ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine omitted Fox’s great credits sequence trick, Marvel Studios can still reverse this change in the MCU’s future.
Ryan Reynolds Can Revive His Brilliant Opening Credits Trick In A New ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool Project
Ryan Reynolds May Be Writing Something New For The MCU’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool
While Marvel Studios hasn’t yet confirmed ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s return to the MCU, Ryan Reynolds recently spoke to Time and revealed that he’s “writing a little something right now” that’s an ensemble, presumably partnering ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool with someone other than Wolverine. There have been many theories about who ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool could team up with next, including Spider-Man and Daredevil, or even a new X-Men team. If a sequel to ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine or some sort of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 4 is released, Marvel Studios can finally bring back Fox’s great opening credits trick.

Any direct follow-up to ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine has some pretty huge shoes to fill, as the Phase 5 movie has become one of the MCU’s most popular and successful installments. A sequel would need to one-up ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s opening credits sequence, and it could do this by bringing back Fox’s witty and satirical or parody-like credits scenes. There’s a lot of pressure on Ryan Reynolds and Marvel Studios to get a sequel to ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine right, but we can’t wait to see the Merc-with-a-Mouth back in the MCU.
