Tom Hardy’s New Crime Thriller With 63% Rotten Tomatoes Score Becomes Netflix Hit

Tom Hardy has been a reliable presence on the big and small screens for several decades now. After making his TV debut in the acclaimed Band of Brothers miniseries, Hardy made a splash in film with a supporting role in the cast of Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2001). Hardy continued to make a name for himself over the next decade, starring in movies like RocknRolla (2008) and Bronson (2008), before then appearing in Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending blockbuster, Inception (2010).

Hardy didn’t slow down in the years that followed, collaborating with Nolan twice more on The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Dunkirk (2017). 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road now stands as one of Hardy’s most iconic roles, and it cemented the actor as an action star, something he would continue to explore in the Venom trilogy. Now, Hardy has taken on what could be his most violent and action-packed role yet.

Havoc Becomes A Netflix Success

The Tom Hardy Action Thriller Tops The Streamer’s Charts

Havoc

has just become a major viewership hit on Netflix, according to new streaming data. Directed by Gareth Evans, who is best known for directing The Raid (2011) and its 2014 sequel, the new action thriller features Hardy playing Patrick Walker, a cop who must fight his way through the criminal underground in order to retrieve a politician’s estranged son. In addition to Hardy, the Havoc cast features Timothy Olyphant, Forest Whitaker, Jessie Mei Li, and Quelin Sepulveda.

Netflix now reveals that Havoc is the number one most-viewed movie on the service globally for the week of April 21 – 27. The action thriller racked up an impressive 29.8 million views in total, with 53.1 million hours viewed. Havoc was the number one film in 40 countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, Denmark, and South Africa, and ranked in the top 10 in 93 countries. What This Means For Havoc

The Film’s Mixed Reception Explained

Considering Havoc only just released on Netflix on April 25, it’s not entirely surprising to see it make the top 10 list. It is an impressive achievement that it came first, however, and with close to 30 million views, a monster lead over the second-place тιтle. This viewership success goes some way to making up for the reception to the film thus far, with Havoc reviews being somewhat mixed from critics due to the film’s familiar story and paper-thin characters.

The film’s critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes may be a lukewarm 63%, but the audience-driven Popcornmeter score is only 38%. Evans set a very high bar with both of The Raid movies, and the general sentiment from viewers seems to be that Havoc does not meet the quality of his past work. While the strong viewership could pave the way for a sequel, the reception could work against its long-term prospects. Clearly, however, plenty of people are watching the movie in its first week, and it will be interesting to see if Havoc continues to dominate in the weeks ahead.
