What Drop’s Digital Release Date Means For The Movie

How Has It Done So Far?

Drop premiered at SXSW in March and was released in theaters the following month on April 11, and has received overwhelmingly positive reactions from critics and audiences. Drop reviews have praised the film for blending Hitchcockian suspense with a smart use of modern technology, living up to its pulpy promise, and offering a standout role for star Meghann Fahy. Audiences also consider it a satisfying ride and a delightfully cheesy thriller that is entertaining right up until its final moments, earning strong 84% and 80% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to its reviews, Drop has also raked in a respectable haul at the box office. Released alongside The Amateur, Warfare, and The King of Kings, Drop debuted to $7.4 million during its opening weekend. Its digital release effectively marks the end of its theatrical run, and to date, it’s made just over $26 million at the box office against its small $11 million budget. Though a two-week theatrical run may seem short, it isn’t out of the ordinary for a low-budget thriller.

Our Take On Drop’s Digital Release Date

It Should Continue To Be A Hit

Drop‘s digital release on April 29 may seem like it’s cutting its successful theatrical run short, but it could end up being a strategic decision. The thriller has been receiving a lot of buzz going back to its SXSW debut, and releasing on digital platforms so soon could capitalize on that positive buzz. With word-of-mouth momentum, Drop is perfectly positioned to thrive on digital platforms, but for those who aren’t willing to pay the price and don’t mind waiting, Drop will eventually be available for streaming on Peacock.
