Demi Moore reveals that she kept an iconic black dress from her ’90s romance movie. Moore has had a long-established career, known early on for appearing in St. Elmo’s Fire and About Last Night…, and for being part of the Brat Pack alongside Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Molly Ringwald. She also starred opposite Patrick Swayze in the acclaimed romantic drama Ghost, which earned over $505 million and remains one of her most recognizable roles, notably for her short haircut.
Over the years, Moore has appeared in several beloved movies, including A Few Good Men and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and garnered recognition for portraying Lieutenant Jordan O’Neil in G.I. Jane, sporting another famous shaved hairdo. As of recently, she played socialite Ann Woodward in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and has a main role in Taylor Sheridan’s successful streaming series Landman. To cap an impressive 2024, Moore starred as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance, and earned her first Academy Award nomination.
Demi Moore Kept Her Iconic Indecent Proposal Dress
The Dark Romance Movie Is Over 30 Years Old
Moore, who has also been admired for her style, donned a now-iconic black dress in the 1993 dark romance Indecent Proposal. The film, directed by Adrian Lyne of Fatal Attraction and Jacob’s Ladder, explores a married couple, David and Diana Murphy, who are offered a large sum of money in exchange for Diana spending an evening with billionaire John Gage. Along with Moore, the cast of Indecent Proposal includes Woody Harrelson, Oliver Platt, Billy Bob Thornton, and Robert Redford. Following its premiere, the movie was poorly received, but generated over $266 million worldwide.
In a recent video for People, Moore recalled some of her most celebrated looks, including the black dress from Indecent Proposal. She revealed that the garment, designed by Thierry Mugler, was replicated when the film came out. Moore then explained how it became “an important part of the story,” and therefore had to make a statement. Sharing her appreciation, Moore revealed that she kept the dress, but eventually sent it to Planet Hollywood, and noted how “it would stand the test of time.” Read Moore’s comments below:
This is the very iconic Thierry Mugler dress that, I did hear, was the most copied dress of the year. I mean, you know, I only heard about it after the fact. You know, the dress was such an important part of the story. It’s that kind of moment. She’s, you know, looking at something that she knows she could never afford. Then the whole question of, ‘Does everything have a price?’ comes in, you know, what the whole movie’s story is. And the dress really was such an important part of the story. It needed to be something unique that stood out. That was memorable. And this was just an incredible find. I love this dress.
I did keep this dress and, at the moment, I am in search of getting it returned, since I gave it to Planet Hollywood at one point to have as part of their memorabilia. I don’t know where I would wear it, but most definitely I would, because that’s the thing about something that, you know, this is something that I think would really hold up. It would stand the test of time. Great design does.
Our Take On The Indecent Proposal Dress
It Serves A Purpose In The Movie
Early in the movie, Diana (played by Moore) discovers the black dress in a casino retail shop and imagines it for herself, despite not having the means to pay for it. That becomes her first interaction with John, when the billionaire suggests buying it and begins flirting with Diana. As Moore explained, the clothing becomes significant to Indecent Proposal, because while Diana dismisses John at that moment, he ends up gifting her and David a fancy room, along with the dress. That suggests that perhaps money can impress people, and some things can be bought.
