Havoc Ending: Walker’s Fate Gets Definitive Response From Director

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Havoc.Havoc director Gareth Evans explains the ending and gives a definitive answer about Walker’s fate. The latest Netflix action movie focuses on Walker (portrayed by Tom Hardy), a disgruntled police officer forced to combat a vicious criminal underworld when a drug heist goes awry. Along with Hardy, the cast of Havoc includes Jessie Mei Li, Timothy Olyphant, Quelin Sepulveda, Justin Cornwell, Yeo Yann Yann, and Forest Whitaker. Throughout the film, more about Walker’s troubled past is revealed and his final confrontation with Vincent (Olyphant) leaves him wounded, and his fate uncertain.

During an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Evans discusses the ending of Havoc and what happened to Walker. The director reveals that it resembles a Western, and that Walker may have to choose whether he wants to divulge his past conduct. Evans adds that an unclear fate was intentional and that audiences should consider where Walker stands, although he does reveal that “he’s alive.” Read Evans’ comments below:

You’ve got the draw of the gun, you’ve got the location. There are certain echoes of the cowboy movies that I grew up loving, but also there’s a moral ambiguity. There’s a question [of], ‘Is Walker going to come clean? Is he going to admit to what he’s done?’

I know what I think Walker’s going to do next, but I like the idea of the audience being able to make up their own mind about what they think Walker’s next steps will be as he’s laying there propped up against a train, watching all the police cars arrive. That ambiguity is something that was key to me and something that was really interesting about how to end the film… It’s down to the audience about what their version of Walker is. Is he redeemable? Is he someone that we can like and stand behind?

When it comes to Walker’s partner, Ellie, Li explains what their final scene meant and why it was less of a happy moment, noting, “It was so sad because she’s finally earned his respect [and] the two of them have this understanding, and yet he’s about to be taken away.

What This Means For The Havoc Ending

There Is More Than One Road Walker Can Take

For much of the movie, Walker is pressured to track down Charlie, the son of corrupt politician Lawrence Beaumont, when he becomes entangled in a disastrous drug deal and goes on the run. Havoc closely follows that storyline and whatever intense or high-stakes scenarios unfold, but the film also explores a past event. It is revealed that Walker and the Narcotics team were on a shady mission when he wounded an undercover agent and Vincent decided to shoot him, despite Walker pleading that they help instead.

By the end of Havoc, Vincent and Jake are exposed for murdering Tsui and there is a grisly shootout. As many characters start dying, Vincent attempts to escape and Walker kills him, but not before getting severely hurt himself. Evans revealing that Walker survives should appease audiences, and considering his fate beyond that remains unclear, there are a couple of options he could take moving forward. Given what he experienced during the movie, and him seemingly preparing to be arrested, it is possible that Walker will choose to make up for his mistakes.
