Star Wars Re-Release Rockets Up 2025 Box Office Chart In Just 3 Days, Outgrossing Multiple A24 & Blumhouse Movies

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith has become a bona fide box office phenomenon in 2025. The movie, which is the final installment of the prequel trilogy in the Star Wars franchise, follows the final steps Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) takes down the path toward embracing the Dark Side and becoming Darth Vader. The 2005 George Lucas movie, which also stars Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Frank Oz, and Christopher Lee, was re-released in theaters the weekend after Easter 2025 in honor of its 20th anniversary.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, the Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith re-release is projected to earn a 3-day total of $42.2 million worldwide by the end of the weekend. That total comes from a gross of $25.2 million in domestic theaters and $17 million internationally. This sees it outgross the entire worldwide theatrical runs of all but 15 movies that have been released in 2025 so far.

Movies that it has handily outgrossed include Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag ($37.8 million), the Jack Quaid movies Companion ($36.7 million) and Novocaine ($33.7 million), the A24 тιтles Death of a Unicorn ($15.9 million), Opus ($2.2 million), and Warfare ($24.1 million), and the Blumhouse releases The Woman in the Yard ($23 million), Drop ($26.1 million), and Wolf Man ($34.1 million).

What This Means For Revenge Of The Sith

The Star Wars Movie Is A Re-Release Outlier

The huge success of the re-release of the finale of the Star Wars prequel trilogy cannot be understated. In fact, in just three days, at the domestic box office alone, it has become the highest-grossing re-release for the franchise since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. While it cannot compete with the Special Edition re-releases of the original trilogy that took place in 1997, which capped out at A New Hope‘s $138.2 million run, it is nevertheless a tremendous achievement for a franchise that has not had a new theatrical installment since 2019.

The most recent feature-length Star Wars movie in theaters was Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

The re-release’s success spells good news for the upcoming Star Wars movies that are currently in the works. In addition to The Mandalorian & Grogu, which follows the continued adventures of the lead characters from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and is set to debut on May 22, 2026, this includes a number of тιтles that are in various stages of development. Set to hit theaters in the coming years are installments directed by James Mangold and Taika Waiтιтi, 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter (which stars Ryan Gosling), and a New Jedi Order movie featuring the return of Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Our Take On The Revenge Of The Sith Re-Release

It Could Spend More Time In Theaters Than Expected

While the re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was only intended to run for a week, that may soon change. The fact that it has become such a substantial box office success in spite of being available to stream on Disney+ and to rent on various VOD platforms at a price of $3.99 or less speaks to general audiences’ hunger for the franchise on the big screen. If the re-release is continued for even one more week, it could potentially continue to climb up the 2025 chart and set major records.
