Onyx Storm finally reveals Violet’s second signet from Andarna, and it turns out she’s been using it all along — though one theory posits that her new power isn’t what she believes it is. When Violet and Xaden talk about their nightmares towards the end of Onyx Storm, they come to the conclusion that Violet has been entering Xaden’s dreams since Iron Flame. Xaden tells Violet that she’s a dreamwalker — a type of Inntinnsic in Fourth Wing‘s fantasy world — but one Empyrean Series theory suggests her abilities go beyond this ᴀssumption.
Given the battle that breaks out shortly after Violet and Xaden’s revelation, Onyx Storm leaves little time to dwell on Violet’s second signet. The next Empyrean Series book will no doubt dive much deeper into it, especially if Violet learns how to use dreamwalking to her advantage. We know from Andarna’s conversation with the irids that Violet’s power is “far more dangerous” than it first appears. It’s possible the act of visiting people’s dreams can be wielded as a weapon. However, one theory posits Violet is actually a full-blown Inntinnsic.
Convincing Onyx Storm Theory Suggests Violet Is A Full Inntinnsic, Not A Dreamwalker
Inntinnsics are deemed dangerous enough to kill in Fourth Wing‘s world, so the Onyx Storm theory that Violet can fully control people’s minds — not just their dreams — could be a game-changer if true. On Reddit, user ResponsibleLow9505 speculates that Onyx Storm‘s dreamwalker reveal is intentionally misleading. Based on this theory, the next Fourth Wing sequel will unravel greater depths to Violet’s power, taking her influence over people’s minds beyond dreams. This theory suggests dreamwalking is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her second signet.
If dreamwalking is simply the initial manifestation of Violet’s second signet, she may eventually be able to access other characters’ minds beyond sleep. Giving her a broader Inntinnsic ability would enable her to exert her power whenever she wants to, and it would put fewer limits on what she can do with it. We know Violet can witness and meddle in other people’s dreams, but she could be capable of reading people’s thoughts and intentions if she’s a general Inntinnsic. Combined with what we’ve already seen, that’s a daunting possibility.
Rebecca Yarros Says We’ve Only Seen 10% Of Violet’s Second Signet So Far
It’s Hard To Imagine The Other 90% Being Just Dreamwalking
One comment from Rebecca Yarros could support the theory that Violet is a full Inntinnsic in The Empyrean Series, as it suggests there’s much more to learn about her new ability. During an interview after Onyx Storm‘s release, Yarros was asked to describe how much of Violet’s second signet readers have seen using a percentage (via TikTok). The author’s answer was surprising: she confirmed we’ve only seen 10% of Violet’s ability so far. While there’s undoubtedly more that Violet can do while dreamwalking, it’s hard to imagine what another 90% of that could comprise.
If Violet’s dreamwalking is simply a portion of a much broader power, however, Yarros’ comment makes sense.
If Violet’s dreamwalking is simply a portion of a much broader power, however, Yarros’ comment makes sense. This leaves a lot more room for Violet’s second signet to grow, as she needs to do more than gain control over her actions in other people’s dreams. If this theory proves true, she’ll also need to extend that ability to waking hours, mastering how to get inside people’s heads at any time she needs to. She could even influence people’s thoughts or actions, which wouldn’t just explain Yarros’ percentage. It would also explain the irids’ response to Violet’s second signet.
The Irids’ Response To Violet & Andarna Suggests Her Power Is Bigger Than Dreamwalking
Their Concern In Onyx Storm Could Hint At A Bigger Inntinnsic Reveal Later On
Another clue that Violet’s second signet is more expansive than dreamwalking is the fact that the irids seem genuinely concerned about Andarna giving it to her. When Violet, Andarna, and the other members of “Quest Squad” meet Fourth Wing‘s seventh breed of dragon, the irids criticize Andarna’s connection to the Empyrean and their involvement in human conflicts. They also chastise her for giving Violet a “dangerous” power, though Violet doesn’t realize what they’re referring to until later in Onyx Storm.
As Inntinnsics are all viewed negatively in The Empyrean Series, it’s possible the dragons are merely referring to Violet’s dreamwalking — but this could just as easily be another misdirect. We’ve yet to see Violet do anything scary with this power, and although there are some interesting places the next Fourth Wing book can take her dreamwalking, it’s doubtful she’ll go full Freddy Krueger with it. Manipulating people’s thoughts and plans through their dreams is one way Violet could prove dangerous. However, even that feels underwhelming compared to the irids’ reaction.
That would qualify as dangerous, and it would have serious implications for future Fourth Wing books.
If Violet is able to expand her ability and access people’s thoughts and intentions, even when they’re awake, that could be enough to make the irids balk. It would certainly make Violet much more dangerous, as she wouldn’t just be a type of Inntinnsic, like Xaden. Her second signet would instead be a much more generalized version of his, giving her more reach and more power. That would qualify as dangerous, and it would have serious implications for future Fourth Wing books.
What Violet Being A Full Inntinnsic Would Mean For The Next Two Fourth Wing Books
It Would Put Her In More Danger (But Also Make Her A Greater Threat)
Violet being a full Inntinnsic after Onyx Storm would lead to some fascinating developments in the next two Empyrean Series books. For one, it would put her in far more danger of being discovered. While Violet could already be killed for her dreamwalking signet, Navarre would fear a broader ability to control and influence people even more. It’d also be more noticeable if Violet used her signet from Andarna in this way, making it more likely she’d be caught. It’d be far more difficult to prove Violet actually entered someone’s dream or nightmare.
It’d give her a serious advantage against the venin and Navarre in Onyx Storm‘s sequel.
And the reason a broader Inntinnsic ability would put a target on Violet is that she would be a greater threat with this. There’s likely a limit to what someone can do while infiltrating another person’s dreams. There’s certainly power in placing ideas and thoughts in people’s minds without them realizing it; the end of Iron Flame proves that. But if Violet could use her ability to read people’s thoughts and intentions — and even control them — and do it at any time, she’d be unstoppable. It’d give her a serious advantage against the venin and Navarre in Onyx Storm‘s sequel.
